Finally got some lovely little Belgium D'Anver chicks going with a broody but yesterday around teatime I checked in on them and found the most recent hatchling laid to the side and a whisker from death, another five minutes and it would have been gone. I think it had fallen on its back and being so tiny couldnt get up- it then got cold and weak away from mums protection, (one of the other hens was fussing (most surprising)but it couldnt get up and back to mum. So I put it in my hands and spent half an hour breathing hot air onto it, then gave it some sugar water and yogurt via a dropper and amazingly it has pulled through. I really thought it was a gonner! Edited to include a pic of it looking a lot perkier!

How lovely Brig, that was amazing timing! I know how quickly chicks die .... When I first kept hens they had a deepish drinking bowl and inevitably one chick fell in and drowned and another got wet and died of cold very quickly. Now, if there is a possibility of chicks I change the drinker to a flat dish. I've just lost about 20 potential chicks as the broodies just gave up on them. Had to dispose of them and it wasn't pleasant. Think it was the storm that did it.

Well done Brig, hope it continues to thrive now. Sorry about yours Rac, antures awful at times. We're down to just one fertile egg this morning as another has been broken overnight.
