I too Charlie for a hack today. He always went out on his own before going out on loan. Well today i couldn't even get him out of the village . So i brought him home and then long reined him out. He did try it on and kept trying to back up to get out of working. He also shot off to the field gate. At this point i made him back up right out of the village. He wasn't impressed as it meant he wasn't getting away with it . By the time i asked him to face the correct way and go forwards he was very happy to. About half way round he saw a pile of grass cuttings and turned and ran past me. So i made him go backwards again past it, this time he tried to turn to face the right way. He behaved perfectly after that . I am going to longrein him out for a week or two and get him going. I was even riding him forwards strongly but he has got away with reversing and spinning with the girl who had him on loan. The good thing is he never tried to buck and i was very confident on him .

Thats great that you sorted it out, it reminded me of my first horse Brigadier who I could have ridden on the M1 he was that good in traffic, well he went on loan for twelve weeks and came back a wreck- everytime a vehicle bigger than a van came past he tried to spin, clearly she had given him nerves. He was fine again after a fortnight or so but it just shows how influential the rider can be!

Charlie was a bit nervous of cars yesterday. He was fine in traffic before but he hadn't seen heavy traffic as it is quiet here, although he had seen large vehicles as there is a haulage yard very close by us. You are right about the rider making a difference to them.

Well done for getting him going, your confidence with him seems to be soaring.
