I have taken Brigs advice and I am giving a one day event a go on Saturday. It is a pick and mix so you can tailor the event to your level so you can actually do a prelim dressage test with 90cm show jumping and 45cm cross country if you wanted.
I am now only eligible to enter one dressage class, so I have to do the Novice Open dressage which is for those who have won at Novice level or above, and I am being brave and doing the 75cm show jumping and cross country. Whilst I have show jumped competitively at this height before I am not ready to move up to the 90cm class and I havent yet taken Brave around a 75cm XC course but he has plenty of scope and it is only 5cm higher than what I did last week.
Wish me luck and some decent weather!

We came fourth in the dressage but would have come second if I hadn't been penalised two marks for use of the voice... grrr. I growled at Brave right in front of the judges box not even thinking... I've never been penalised for using my voice before so you learn something new everyday. I got an 8 for my medium trot which if the best score we have had for that so far as Brave finds collection far easier than extension but he powered out for about five strides across the arena and I was very happy with that.
Got well and truly eliminated on the XC but they let you finish anyway which is great. Had two refusals at the biggest drop into a sunken road that we have ever done, then he refused at some sheep fillers, then I rode straight past a fence then I had two more refusals at a palisade on a really tight corner were you only really had 1 stride after the turn and it caused a lot of problems for this reason.
We clear show jumping but didnt hang around to see if we were placed, again there were a lot of cricket scores going on so once the results are posted you never know.
I was also full of flu hadn't eaten for the previous 24 hours and was dosed up to the eyelids on flu capsules... drove all the way there with jockey wheel down which miraculously was un-damaged and Brave was unflappable so all in all I cant be much happier with how it went.
Anyway will post a raft of pictures in the pictures section once photobucket has finished uploading them

Gosh what a great first time, I know the XC didnt go too well but the SJ and Dressage phase did so thats brilliant, I think you have to remind yourself that events are all about performance in all three disciplines, and there a few horses that can do all three. Look at some of the top riders who go to pieces in one of the phases. So now you know which is your weakest area you can work on it knowing the other two are pretty solid. The only way is up now!!!!

It's a great idea letting you pick n mix the levels! Well, as Brig says, you know where the work has be be put in but great performances in the other two. Shame about being penalised for 'growling' I've never heard of this before.
Still, despite being ill and out of it, brilliant you for giving it a go!
