Young Sam went to his first proper competition on Sunday, a showcross (so not sure it should be here but it's not just XC either!)
He was fizzy and excited during the warm-up and the teenager was struggling to find a good canter on the slippery grass but once on the course he was an angel. Just one hairy moment when he stopped dead because of some scary blue barrels but the teenager reacted quickly and he got going again.
She had chosen to do the 80cm class so as not to overface him but he sailed over everything very neatly, going clear. As they came towards the joker he was going up the hill in such a good canter that despite it being a relative skinny and 90cm, she thought he was up for it and he just flew over it.
She was gutted to make an error on the course and missed out number 14, which would have meant automatic elimination in France so she was lucky just to get time faults and they came in fourth out of 20 - she would have been 2nd otherwise.
struggling with the pix......

So funny we both posted but glad you did as Ive been tinkering with the pics as always and now they are too big to go on here. The blue barrels jump was a warm up one and I think he was just so busy trying to look at everything that when he came up to it he made it impossible to jump, but I really liked the way the Teenager handled it, very calmly and no nonsense like and he responded brilliantly. After that he just got on with everything. I like the pic of him jumping the big scary log, plus the teenager is riding the purple show jump brilliantly, you can see her focused on the next part of the course whilst the horse does his job of concentrating on the jump (clever Sam!) but he is bent the way they are to go- a good lesson for us all really as you see so many young riders still jumping the jump they are on when there is nothing they can do at that stage.
