R is driving me potty. P, of course (being perfect) likes to 'go' in his special place so wanders away from the hay piles to dump. R, however, (being R ) just lifts his tail and dumps wherever he is, which is usually in the middle of the hay as he tends to dance in it even though I put the piles against the base of trees to discourage him. Is there any way I can train him to walk away to dump? And pee, for that matter?

Harry wees in the hay too, it drives me crackers....and it's always on a huge fresh pile to boot!
Years ago i know someone who potty trained their gelding to save the shavings bed. Basically everytime he went back into stable (as so many do as Sunny use to do this too) he'd force out a pee...so she grabbed a bucket and held it under the flow. Immediatly he would stop and wait till he thought sh'd gone, then she'd appear with bucket again. This went on for months but eventually he gave in and just pee'd in the bucket, so she pottied him everytime he went back in stable. Not sure if the effort was worth the saving but there you go.

Don't think I can be that focused! Can't see me lurking around the paddock to catch R's poo in a bucket!

Haf - I do that with Savs or the wheelbarrow if its close enough, bless her. Brax pees in the hay which drives us all crackers because she does the "well I don't want it know!" and then Daints eats it which is making me cringe. The others tend to be really good - the chatterhappies spend a lot of time in the Chip Hut so they go in there, the others tend to go down the fence line, they learnt simply by us praising them when we were around to go there and it makes it much easier to clean the field, they do go other places of course but when most of it is on the fence line we don't worry too much. Weve also taught sunshine to "man down" when we want to clean his sheath by just saying "man down" and then he gets praise and carrots when he whacks it out and mum cleans it . All by using praise or food. Fun fun fun with us - gonna teach Sunshine to moonwalk Michael Jackson style.

If you find out how to do it please let me know. The bigger girls tend to have certain areas they use but the minis all go wherever whenever!

We used to teach our horses to pee on command. Every time you see him pee you whistle. Eventually when you whistle he will pee! Simples! Takes time though!
