Sam needs a snuggly quilty stable rug as he is going to be fully clipped this week as he is looking very scruffy with his half yak coat and is also rather sweaty.
Any brands that are especially good (and not too costly)? Anything to avoid?

Weatherbeetas are always worth a look. I bought a Shires rug for the bug and was pleasantly suprised at the quality and the snugness of it.

Yes, I do like WBs - P is on the fourth year of his Landa, which considering all the trees in their paddocks, seems a bit of a miracle.

Premier equine are lovely but sale ones are still on the stiff side. Wouldnt a really nice woollen fleece do as an under rug to his current stable rug, the newmarket or horseware ones are really really nice and double up as winter travellers. Mind you can see you ending up withboth!!!

The whitney style fleeces are lovely, i also like the look of the horseware whitney style stable rugs but i've always loved that colour scheme.
Weatherbeeta or prem equine would be my first choices.

Not sure what you mean by whitney or newmarket rugs - are they brands? Of course he already has a very snazzy WB fleece (although it is pink and grey check LOL - there I go again buying bargains!) but apparently would benefit - natch - from a duvet as well, preferably one that covers his skinny shaved neck (actually muscling up nicely now). Here we call the fleecy rug a cooler - but he did travel in it. Is that enough under a rug? Confused now ....

Yea i know but my mum has one that she's had since whe was groom on a hunt yard 35 years ago so they are worth their price, I personally like the shires ones for quality and tend to buy Requisite - Robinsons home brand - for the rug wreckers because they fall apart after a while any way and they're cheap to replace though I have taken to buying cheap on amazon now. If I buy a rug for the bug for £35 and it lasts the winter then I consider it money well spent because she's a sodding nightmare rugs wise and now she's out with Pest then I expect rips and tears but the Shires ones done really well. We have Masta rugs that we have had 11 years which we bought for £50 so thats less than £5 a year which is the kinda maths I like. Horseware are also expensive but from what I've seen the quality is impeccable and they often have a guarantee for a few years. Amigo are made by horseware but are the value sort of range. www.equestrianclearance.com/products/horse_wear/rugs/index.htmlI haven't tried Mark Todd rugs but when I ride I look like a walking advert for the brand - it's expensive but again the quality is fab - I have a MW coat that I wore with a Tshirt underneath in the middle of december and I was sweating and their gloves are lush!

I use Mark Todd and Masta rugs on Chompy and they are a good fit for the chunky lad so would think they probably wouldn't be a good fit on a skinny minnie like Sam

Tordi has a WB Belmont Combi rug and its really snug and warm. I got it from Throstlenest Saddlery for £49 I think. It was in the sale at the time but they may still have some, they have a website www.throstlenestsaddlery.co.uk/
