Ah well we got to the vets, just about! what a drama! The little mare would NOT get into the trailer! Me, OH and OH's mum battled, coaxed, and fought for over 2 hours! No exaggeration! We was an hour and 45 mins late for our appointment even though we started getting ready about an hour before! I could have physically killed her! But once we given up and had phoned the vets to arrange a call out instead, she waltzed in! little moo! #
So anyway! we got there, late but there! The (different) vet took one look at her leg and just gasped! talk about reassurance! So straight into the xray room and took about half hour and OH holding her front leg up to actually get some decent shots lol! The vet found an old fracture on the inside of the same cannon that the lump was on! I couldn't believe it! If anyone had seen an xray of a cannon the will know how lovely and smooth the bone looks, and there was a huge hook hanging off it! I thought it looked like a dogs dew claw! The vet said that she had never seen anything like it! She said It was a good few years old, and had obviously not had any medical attention at all! (poor Fern! Bast*rd ex-owners!) But yeah, It had fused itself back together as much as it could and the vet said that its not, and probably never will cause much trouble for her! so that was that really! Regarding the actual lump, there was nothing showing on the xray which meant it was not fractured or splintered, but we could see a bit of disturbance in the cannon bone, some bad concussion basically.
So, all good but still not explaining the lump so to the next room for a touch of sedation and an ultrasound scan! And there it was on the scan, a huge black spot! Fluid!
So we know there was fluid, now just what sort! So out come the needle! (cue me retching and going weak!)
She drew some into a syringe, was blood and yellowy which was apparently good, but not infection yellowy! I cant remember what it was but something beginning with S. (prize to who guesses)lol Anyway, completely normal! she took it to the lab and said there was low white cells which means its not infected! And then left the needle in for a few mins to drain some of it out then bandaged her up! And that was that!
Verdict! Not serious! (Phew) basically she had had a bad knock, most likely from the stake fence post. And its a trauma to the soft tissue and slight concussion to the cannon. Lumps still bigger than an egg but will(hopefully, apparently) go down within the week. Vet is coming out next week to check up and she should be allowed out if all is well! If it hasn't gone down she will have to have some steroids. But I am just so glad it is all sorted now! Sent home with armfulls of bute, antibiotics (not for infection but just in case as she has had the syringe poked around her!), and bandages! Don't have to be changed till every 3/4 days as there isn't any wound, just purely for pressure! so yeah! that's basically it! fingers crossed will be back to normal and riding within a month! Wahoo! Gives good excuse to concentrate on Peanut in the meantime (we had our first canter in school today:D) So yeah, feel sorry for the insurance guys though hehe! Sooo happy!!
Sorry for essay and Thanks for all the support!
