Anyone used one? I tried Pete in one on Tuesday, fed up of the constant gnashing. He was actually pulling the reins out of my hands in walk! Result! It may have been a fluke but he was great, better brakes, no problems with steering and a nice calm mouth. No gnashing! We are going out on the roads tomorrow so will give it a better test! I know he has tooth problems so another good reason to give his mouth abreak. Anyone else used one other experiences?

A horse I used to ride occasionally used one but it always seemed really strung out and ditzy whereas when Id ridden it in a snaffle it seemed great. They do seem to have their place though Sol so I wouldnt discount one on that experience!

Neither of mine have ever wore bits, i much prefer bitless personally. I've used a variaty of types and never had stopping/steering issues with any (well there was one stopping Murph snacking with a scawbrig if that counts!) I honestly think the vast majority of horses will go as well, if not better, if you find the right bitless for them. I used to ride my friends ex racer in my hackamore whilst she stuck to a mylor. Murph likes the LG best...he didn't like the cross over at all but will go in anything really as i've used him as test dummy for all kinds of bitless variations over the years. I'm rather tempted to try one of those flower hackamores on him next as never tried one of those Harry goes best in the english hackamore...he can be little strong in the scrawbrig out hacking (although i'm using it to lead him from) but i often use it for schooling. I've only used the LG on him otherwise as he's got a massive head and my sidepull and crossover didn't fit. This is the LG as they are not so common

Thanks, folks. It's an encouraging start. Have felt bad about his obvious annoyance for a long time!

Never tried a hackamore but I know people who have had good results in them. Personally can't recommend my Dr Cook crossunder bitless enough . Nothing has stopped Faith better ...even when she's bolted! I think the only time she didn't stop was when I lost my stirrups, my boot almost fell off, and I ended up sliding out of the side door and she ran off without me . Other than that it has been brilliant and we've never had a problem in it. Faith can be pretty strong too when she wants to be, and also she's rather on her forehand (something we're working on) and leans A LOT when she feels like it, but the Dr Cook has never let me down and also because it doesn't pull on anything, I don't feel mean hanging onto her head when she's in her 'freight train' mood (i.e. pull like you mean it!!!).

Pete's current hackamore, another good day today. Good steering and brakes. he seems fairly content. The rubs on his face are fro his headcollar with fly fringe attached. He is out tonight no rug no fly fringe just au naturel!

I've been thrilled to pieces with Paco's Dr Cook's. I tried it initially as an alternative to having his wolf tooth removed and we have never looked back. I do everything with it, and have even won a baby dressage comp. It took me a while to get used to the right amount of 'contact' and if I'm really honest I will admit that P is a little lighter in my hand in a bit, but that's Ok for me. Steering and brakes are brilliant.

I ride mine mostly in hackamores. Currently got an S hackamore on my girl, and my mothers horses are in an english hackamore and an LG at the moment. I have used other types of bitless but personally me and my horses seem to prefer hackamores

I tried Danser in one once, i have an english hackamore. Once was enough, she ran off with me and i had no brakes at all. Bramble went well in it and i have tried Charlie in it. He went quite well in it for a while but then he started to get really strong and have no brakes. I like the look of the LG one.

How does the s hackamore work? It looks a very complicated design, i can't work out if it's severe or not? Infact i don't think i'd have a clue which way up/around it went when you see the pics of nosepiece only.
I missed a flowere one on ebay yesterday, hate getting outbid by pennies!
