I know we have covered this before but I am debating about whether to call the vet out.
took brave out for a hack yesterday and he had a cough when we went for a little canter but was otherwise fine. took him out today and we were off... he was raring to go so we left the yard at a spanking trot for 5 minutes or so,
walked for another 5 minutes before heading into the last remaining stubble field for a canter. cantered about 10 strides when Brave stopped and had a huge cough, I saw what looked like a bit of grass fly out and figured he'd got that stuck in his throat. went off again in canter and the same thing happened. tried once more and this time we took off to the end of the field.
We walked back down the field where the farmer stopped me for a chat, he is happy for me to ride in the stubble fields, whilst we were talking Brave would not stand still (fairly normal) but then had another huge cough with gobs of snot flying everywhere.
I minute or two later he got really agitated (I though he was being bothered by the midges) and I though he was going to rear/buck/bolt but another cough came out. At which point I decided to get get off and walk home. led him out of field with him prancing beside me before he calmed down and up the road for a bit so I thought I would hop back on and walk him him.
We passed one of our usual canter spots and I could feel him wanting to go but as we approached he coughed again!
He is not off his feed, he wants to charge about, he is hardly getting any hay just now as they are out for about 16 hrs per day and I am not short of grass. He didnt have a snotty nose when we left this morning but he does now. The only thing I can think of is that he has a cold!
I think I will get the vet out tomorrow and stick a heavier rug on him tonight. Its really difficult at the moment because the last couple of days the evenings and the morning have been really nice and I almost don't want to rug them at all but have been putting Brave and Chompy out in their rain sheets to give them some cover
