Now I know when I am on the right diaganol - by feel. But somone asked me the other day how you 'tell' and I coudlnt for the life of me explain it....i was trying to think what I was taught as a kid (although the main way mum taught me was no stirrups and sitting trot and calling which ever leg I was told to in turn when it hit the ground so I always knew which leg was where). But apart from that I couldnt think of a standard, Riding type school way of advising how you tell....
someone else have a go

You should be sitting as the outside shoulder is coming back to you.

or as you rise you see the outside foreleg move forward, staying sitting for a few strides sometimes helps you to start on the right one.
