I tend to work on this continually and have cracked it with Harriet who is quite pedantic about being square. She anticipates me all the time and sometimes if she thinks Im about to ask for halt she will plant herself and square up completely oblivious of me on top. Its ok if she gets it right but if it was just a half halt Im going for I sometimes have to be happy with the halt!
Welly has been different. There isnt a straight bone in his body and his snaky neck and shoulders make good halts tricky. But the last two sessions seem to have got through to him. He is more or less even in front now but his right leg tends to trail. I always look, and Ive taken to tapping up the offending leg with the whip (only gently). Well today he corrected his halt every time bar one. On the final halt I didnt need to look as at last if felt good, and he knew he had done well, he put his nose to my foot and got a good old head rub.

Gosh well done! Indio is like Welly, plus he likes to grin at the judge... Our halts are definitely a work in progress!!! I've started working on them from the ground but he does start to worry if we do too much of it (and offers turn-on-the-forehand or rein-back) so it has to be little and often. I lack the patience so I need to work on myself too.

Good ol' Welly! Paco has more or less understood the square halt now but it is not always a given that he can move off well afterwards (there is a halt in our dressage test followed by a progressive move off into trot). If I am too firm in my hands to encourage him not to open up in the transition he will do a step back so I am learning to be lighter and play a little with the reins to keep the contact. Finesse is not my strong point.
