As I have a sharer now for Ed and with mornings and evenings being too dark, I only get the chance to hack once a fortnight (I have a lesson every other Sat on 'my' w/e day so hack alternate weeks) I am determined to make the most of it when I can. Yesterday had planned a very slow steady ride alone - Eddie has had a few 'exciting' hacks recently and was starting to revert back to her old firery joggy behaviour so I was determined to reinstall some manners. Was dry when I got to the yard, windy as I tacked up and the rain started to fall as I was getting on! I was determined and off we went. We have a nice circular ride which involves a small bit of road work, turn off onto the tracks, a nice long gallop uphill and then back to the yard. We reached the bottom of the hill and Eddie got extremely excited as this is where she would normally go for it. By this time the rain was driving down on us and it was very tempting to just let her go and get back quicker! But I stuck to my guns and much to Eddies disgust we walked (and did a lot of circles and shoulder in each time she jogged!) all the way to the top. So Eddie changed tack and pretended she was a spooky pony (she very rarely spooks!) and danced past the next few gardens before she finally gave up and we walked on a long rein home, and even managed a nice steady trot on a loose rein. We played in the deep puddles (she'd never be afraid of a water jump x-country).
We were absolutely soaked when we got back but I felt a good sense of acheivement. Wrapped her up warm to dry off and keep warm while I had to muck out in my soggy coat and johds!
But my love for new yard was re-sparked when somebody arrived with warm mulled wine and lemon drizzle cake. Perfect!
