I am worried sick. 2 horses were taken last night from North Leeds/Bradford border in West Yorkshire.
I hope to god those poor people get their horses back.
They were cob types that were taken apparently.
Horrific. Our yard has upped security but still makes me want to camp out in Moo's field.

Thats awful Salexis, I don't blame you for wanting to camp in her field. There seems to be a lot going on in West Yorkshire at the moment and it is very worrying.

That is awful! I am so paranoid. heard ray whinnying at 4am this morning, complete panic! it woke me up. ran out in my pjs armed with a broom (not sure what i was going to do with it) nothing there.
A few haynets had been knocked on floor and my riding gloves, and something had been digging around the stables - not people though..

Huge travelling/ fraternity in west yorks area with good motorway links The A1/M62/m1 are all central in this area so access to all ports/areas is easy. Also it is one of the designated areas for asylum seekers/refugees so planty of eastern europeans looking for income. dont you just love our Country! It is seriously worrying! Hope everyone's horses are safe!

Please listen- In yorkshire this is not scaremongering- horses HAVE been stolen! There's bound to be some false stories and chinese whispers but police ARE looking for the vehicles and they are stealing to order! Becca you are spot on about the van. Please be vigilant!

How can even the most faint glimer of info concerning horse stealing be scare mongering. Surely the more info we can get on the vehicles/people involved, the better we can protect ourselves. I would rather have to plough through pages of "Horses taken/suspious people" threads, than have people slip through the net and steal again. Bring it on ... I for one think that my nags are too precious for me to pass any info off as scare-mongering/heresay ect. Its too late when they are gone.

Luc x because false allegations of stolen horses which panic owners and cause unneccesary suffering are cruel and nasty. fair enough if horses HAVE been taken as it appears to be the case in this complaint but the other 25 odd horses allegedly taken have not been taken or if they have then the owners have decided not to report them to police which seemms highly unlikely and that is why it is scaremongering. the veicles numbers taken for 3 vehicles now amout to over 20 registrations due to people taking incorrect numbers or from simple lies and this means the information becomes watered down and not of any help. Inforation is only of use when it is true and the lies and nonsense being spread is of no help to anyone.

I think the message that maxie put about scaremongering WAS warranted. There is a certain amount of hysteria about these thefts and the team that are apparently touring the country and some information circulating is bound to be as a result of over-sensitivity. sometimes it helps to have a voice of common sense to just calm things down a little. Some of the information in Yorkshire is correct and some is rumour, but at least people are on their guard and should remain so- any information is good information provided it doesnt get into the wrong hands! brig

I agree with Maxi and Brig. Common sense and balance is what is called for. The trouble is, as Maxi says, you don't know what is hearsay and what is fact half the time. Human nature being what it is usually encourages a bit of embellishment when information gets passed on but there is no doubt that horse thefts and horse attacks are taking place. The police round our way are not known for taking horse crime seriously so the fact that they have been calling in at yards after the attacks prove they are giving some credence to some of the stuff going round. We can only be vigilant and report on here and other forums anything we learn or witness. But try to keep it balanced and well founded.

After double checking with friend in Aberdeen the other week and making sure that the police had told her to beef up her security. I then read the news paper (we all know how fantasticaly factual they always are....not) I got a horrid feeling as I put 2+2 together. The article was about horse owners being more vigilant due to the maiming of horses in the run up to the solstice. This happened as far as i can remember in Stirling-shire but the previous year, tail cutting had happened in Aberdeen-shire. 2 years ago someone in Inverness lost a mare due to this barbaric practice and I think she ended up having to hand rear her foal. I think that may be the reason why my friend told to look to her security.Makes my blood boil to think of greedy people stealing for a fast buck or sicko's.

Brig Please ....be extra vigilant.. I can't express the fear in my neck of the woods tonight.. Confirmed thefts etc..by police Please don't be lulled into a false sense of security. These threats are real. Just take that extra look before you leave the yard. Don't fall into the same trap as hundreds of other owners " It will never happen to me". Stay safe Luc x

I revcently contacted the security chap at the hospital where I work to see if he could find anything out about horse thafts in South Yorkshire, this was his reply just last week: "Have checked with South Yorkshire Police and they had a missing horse in March found in some ones garden and a horse attacked in January by hooligans. Have checked with Derbyshire Police who say that there has been a lot of thefts of horses and equipment in the Derbyshire area and across the country. Derbyshire Police had nine horses reported stolen from Millhouse sanctuary on the 21 May 2008 and suggest visiting Derbyshire Horse Watch for advice"
There is certainly a lot of truth in teh rumours, we must be vigilant but also remain calm Zx

Do be careful saza the baby stolen on the 12th this month was 8 weeks old, easy pickings. can easily be physically lifted by two people I quess. He was stolen from Lancashire and he will be needing and pineing for his mum its so awful just wondering where he might be. So far no sighting of him despite his distinctive marking.X P.S please see thread 'stolen baby' there is a photo , this one is reported to the police , the news papers and BBC who may put it on there web site. Its not a false allegation and the more the word is spread the beter.
