I was looking up Paco's nostrils (as you do) and saw that in both of them he seems to have a small hole on the interior wall, as though he's had a nose ring or has been snorting so much cocaine that it is eating away his septum. Since he has had no piercings in the four years I've had him, and don't think he knows any drug dealers, I am wondering what they are. I tried to compare him with other horses but few were willing to stand still while I peered up their nostrils. Is he normal? Indeed, am I?

I haven't a clue! but if its always being like that and there are no ill effects, perhaps there is nothing to worry about- I am interested to hear what soloutions are going to be suggested though

No, he makes no noise at all. The 'holes' are slightly pinky/red and look a bit like a blister when the skin has rubbed off. Identical position both sides

i just had a look, up one nostril there was a tiny red dot about 1 and a half to two inches in, about 2 or 3 mm big?
and the other one still had black skin at that point, and with it being pretty dark up there anyway, i couldnt see!
We must be mad, looking up our horses noses! x

Yeah Abi, that's right. They aren't holes in the sense of going right through, more pink spots. I could see them quite clearly as his nostrils (naseaux in French - one of my very favourite words, dunno why, just like the way it sounds nas-o lol ;D) are pink. Can't remember how I came to be looking up his nostrils, you know how it is ... So Brig, if they are sinus holes, that's normal, I take it?

Yes, sinus are just drainage holes, the skull is full of pockets/ crevices/ glands all which would fill up with tissue fluid unless they had somewhere to go, the nose is the natural drainage for the horse so it makes sense you can see some in there.
Also when a horse breathes in cold air, the warmth of the body vapourises it, now if the pockets in the skull werent there your horse would have steam coming out of his ears or his head would explode, but the steam has to go somewhere and then eventually drain out . We probably have something similar but because the horse is a prey animal and he needs a more efficient oxygen system his sinus are probably more developed or obvious. The nose is the major sinus or like they say in Nemo- all drains lead to the sea!! If you get what I mean! Brig (laughing at how off topic I can go!)

Is this not normal Brig? Mine do it all the time especially when I'm grooming - I refer to it as dangling! I just thought all geldings did it!!! (They do get very excited at new mares but are more or less indifferent to their mare field companions at this stage)

sunshine does it when you tickle his itchy spot suddenly it drops, but never around a mare

I think they do it when they are relaxed- when i first got him he was really shy!!! especially when I wanted to clean it- he looked at me as though I was mad! But now it drops out all the time so I think its a trust/confidence thing! dont know for sure though ! Guess Im flattered!! Brig

I think it's a relaxed thing too, i often drive up the yard at lunch to check the ponies and my boy always has his boy out, especially if there is a nice breeze on a hot day. It's when i drive past and he is smacking himself in the belly with it that i feel like i have interrupted something

Hi everyone, The holes are the horses tear ducts. My mare had an allergic reaction last year and I was a bit perplexed. Asked vet when she came out, felt a bit silly!! ha ha
