How have your horses been after being laid off when they come back into work? I am hoping to finally ride my horse after about a six week break! Now waiting for a day when H and Barney can come with us to hold my hand! Going to be next weekend now, sadly.

Good luck, i'm sure Pete will look after you.
Mine are usually too unfit to do anything but puff! Like that currently as only getting out on average about once a week.

When Eddie had a longer break last summer due to unexplained lameness she actually came back better than ever. I think she was off for 4 weeks in total. Seemed to have done her good and she hadn't forgotten anything

Rose has had 2 weeks of due to not having a saddle. But Usually she comes back better than ever but i dont know weather this time she feels good having a freeier back (saddle gone down from 17.5 to 16.5in) But trot atm is defiantly a bit exciting! so currently have to do lots more walk in the warm up then shes ok to trot. Had a little canter yesterday and she was good as gold its just the trot!

P pretty much had the summer off (mind you 2011 seems to have been a year of getting him fit time and time again ....) and in fact I don't think they 'forget' stuff. At our last few lessons P has been doing some really nice lateral work even though it has been 2-3 years since we worked at it properly . But I'm always very careful to bring him back into work slowly after a lay-off, even a short one. No galloping away over the hills first time out!!

As you all know, 'coming back into work' is all Faith ever seems to do!!! She can be off for a few weeks to a few months at a time (or more recently it's been almost a year since I rode properly) and usually when we start things up again, she is FANTASTIC...oddly it's the more we do things, the worse she gets . First time out she will go a new way and act like a pro (no spooking at big tractors or fallen trees or whatever), but then on perhaps the 4th or 5th time out, she'll shy and spook and nap and bolt at every little thing...even something as daft as her own shadow . What a pudding. Like Racaille I try to be very careful and take things slowly after a break...to tell you the truth we've only ever got fit enough to canter regularly ONCE. And Faith is nearly 15 now!!! Goodness me that doesn't sound good does it. Good luck with Pete. I'm sure he'll be fine, he's quite a gent .
