Where we are moving to has direct access to a bridleway, what are your thoughts about riding on it at night?? Do you think lights could be riggedup on our ponios or am I mad?

Wait for a full moon. Loads of light if not cloudy and you never know you could meet a wearwolf!!! I actually think it sounds fun (in the moon light anyway) but although people must have done it for centuries - you might find it a tad creepy. Wonder what a horse's night sight is like?

I wouldn't find it creepy, my friend would though. I have got a head torch. Think their night sight should be reasinable as they are prey animals.

Your eyes will adjust to the dark. Just make sure you check the track regularly in daylight for rabbit holes and things. And the booger man!!

You need to be very sure that track is safe, as said above, but apart from that, night riding is fun, if a little spooky! Some horses are fine about it, others get jittery. But hell, try it!

I've been night riding before. Not particularly intentionally but we got caught out in the dark and I have to say that once you get past the "oh sh!t it's dark!" bit, it's actually quite fun. Luckily we'd gone out equipped with hi-viz, lights and various other things to make us visible so it was ok, but I wouldn't have liked it as much if I'd had no equipment, especially since I was on a friends 16.2hh almost all black cob who I'd never ridden before! Dibble turned out the be the complete gent though and even stared down a big car with full beams that almost blinded us without thinking twice. Bless him, I liked that horsey . Something I would highly recommend alongside the obvious lights (white on the front, red behind) is a hi-viz exercise sheet. The reflective strips make you easier to see when car headlight beams hit you, but the bright yellow-ness helps the rider behind keep track of the rider in front! Sounds daft but when it's dark, anything light-coloured is easier to see. Other than that, I'd have a go on a moonlit bridleway! At this time of year it wouldn't even have to be that late at night either!!!

Night riding is fun, I used to do it lots, but best avoided around bonfire night, Chinese New Year etc etc for obvios reasons, also check theres not much poaching goes on- you dont want to be accidentally shot!

wouldn't fancy it where we are as it's seriously dark for starters and secondly the tracters often work late into the night at busy times.....but if your braver than me give it a try!
...thats not to mention all the monsters who would be coming out of hiding after dark...rustle, crunch, rustle [dark shadows following you], rustle, crunch, twit-twoo...

Sounds good fun, In the winter when I am squeezing in rides ;D me and Fire do occasionally get home in the dark. But he is very good and knows his way around, the ground is good so why not ;D Riding at night gives you a really different out look on the places around you. Yellow little leaves on the floor really glow in the dark and look like stars on the floor!
