Am hoping to get a couple of extra lessons over the hols but can't decide whether to go for a lunge lesson or private riding lesson. Have never been on a lunge lesson before - do you get much out of them? Also if i go for a private riding lesson i am not guaranteed to get the owner of the RS (who is taking us for the BHS riding section training) who is a really good teacher - suppose i could just request it though....plus not really sure what i need work on - everything really, am still riding like a numpty despite being more confident lol! Would maybe like to do some jumping as havent jumped in ages....Argh, i dunno lol!
What would you choose?

Lunge lessons improve your position no end, I would have a lunge lesson and a jumping lesson. Wouldn't want a lunge lesson on Pete tho'! Too bouncy!

Flea if you have never had a lunge lesson then try it- but the lesson will only be useful if youre instructor knows what they are doing and what you want to get out of it.

Lunge Lesson = Pain ;D But very worth it. I had one a good few weeks back as I was getting frustrated that I couldn't get my legs long and underneath me. It was fascinating to feel Eddie holding herself in natural outline despite me having no stirrups or reins - yet I was using my seat correctly (eventually!)
Could you do a half lunge but then take your stirrups etc back and carry on on a one to one basis. I think you will get far more out of a lesson when done privately.

I would say a private lesson as you need both a very good horse and instructor for a lunge lesson and if the horses aren't used to it then you may not gain anything also with a private lesson then you can work on a number of different things and probably ride for longer as it is easier on you and the horse.

brig - the owner of the RS says she has been lungeing horses for upwards of 30 years and she lunged a horse for us on Sunday for the BHS and she made it look so easy. I would say she definetley knows what she is doing...will maybe enquire about it tonight. I suppose i could give it a go, no harm in trying... If i go i'll let yous know how i get on! Mightnt be for a while tho.
