The awful rain has passed (for now?) and it has turned sunny but cold, with a glacial wind. The ground is frozen hard in the mornings but is drying out when it thaws later so I have managed to get my spreading backside back on Paco. But not often !
We went out yesterday and it was lovely to be out again but it feels like we are starting from scratch - he is very fat and has little puff. To be honest I'm surprised that he has lost that puff so quickly since he was reasonably fit in the autumn but I suppose he has put on some pork.
So we took it slowly, ambling along the sand/stony tracks to avoid soft ground. He was walking out well, though, and we did one or two short trots in between. I didn't even think of taking him to the club as I think he needs to get back in the swing slowly before I ask for hard work, so I shall try and build him up by hacking out to get those muscles working again and the blubber moving.
There's no question that he'll be fit by next w/e (19th) for the Xmas rando, and I'm sad about that. But I wonder how everyone else will cope as they have had the same weather as me? Still, what they do with their horses is their business - I'm not risking a hell for leather rando!

glad you managed to get out, both you and paco will feel better for it you do right not to risk the rando and if the others do then as you say it is up to them what they do with thier horses and if they do end up with injuries then they only have themselves to blame.

It's great getting back out Finally our snow has thawed enough to warrant carefully negotiating the yard drive way (which has spent the past week like an ice rink!) to get out and go stretch our legs. Here's to hoping the rain and horrid cold stays away!!!

glad to hear you are back in the sadle again. you are dead right not to risk Paco although a shame you will miss Christmas rando but who knows maybe something else will turn up. I bet loads of unfit horses will turn up - I know an awful lot of people who would think nothing of competing a horse who wasn't ridden for a few weeks.

What a shame that you will miss the christmas rando. Still, better safe than sorry. We have only just got back on the tracks here. It has been road work only for the last 3 weeks.

Managed to get out again today - glacial but sunny and I was hilariously wrapped up in thermal long johns etc - and just as well as snow is forecast for Thursday and then more blooming rain (I shan't mind missing the Xmas rando if it is peeing down and cold ;D) Went for a lovely couple of hours ambling around - and I noticed that P is getting a bit bossy. If I ask him to collect for a little trot, afterwards he will try to snatch the reins so he can slouch along again buckle-end. Hmm. He's getting into rando mode. Must try and get into the arena as soon as it thaws/dries out. BUT WHEN WILL THAT BE? I HATE WINTER!!!!!!!!!

It's so dark as well. Theres no question of me getting out in the mornings right now as the sun doesn't even start to show itself until about 7.30. Roll on the shortest day of the year.
