Really happy that Pete is on the mend after his poorly leg/back. Chiro says walking for next week to ten days Then build up. Tips please folks on fittening horses. Would love to be sure he doesn't have another wobble 'cos of lack of fitness.

Well, i shouldnt think he would have lost much fitness but after the walking period is up i would start to introduce frequent short trots every time you ride. Plenty of good steady walk and trot work is good for getting their fitness up at the start. Just build up the trotting so you are trotting for longer periods each time after that. As long as you take it slow and do plenty of walk and trot, walk to warm up for a good 10 or 15 mins, id say he would be fine.

He shouldn't have lost much fittness in the week or so he was off. As Flea says, I would do the walk period and then more or less go back to normal only a little less for the first day or two. He will probably be quite frisky!!

Not sure he was as fit as he should be to start with. Want him to have muscles of steel!

I'm of the slow but sure school. I do tons of walking to start with. Then walking up hills, Then trotting up hills working up to 20-30 minutes of uphill trotting - and this means active engaged trot, not just swinging along, without a break.
That'll put some muscles on his bum!

Echo Rac. When I was getting Eddie fit last winter we started off from a 5 min walk building that up to about 40 mins. Then introduced trot and again gradually increased that until we were doing a 20 - 30 min trot round the block every day which included a couple of great hills. I also used out field as its on a hill so great for building the hind quarters. Weekends would be a longer ride combined walk and trot for 2 - 3 hours. The one thing I struggled with was fatser work to build stamina - the ground wasn't suitable anywhere to do much canter/gallop work but you have that lovely old railway line I think? I've just started again after Eds injury and we're doing small bursts of trot now and just started trotting up the hills. Had a short canter in the field yesterday.

lol I though my two were fairly fit this summer but like Scatty we have no suitable ground for faster work but Murph would never be caught again if he had to trot for 30 mins. He thinks trotting half a mile is worthy of ringing the eqine equiviliant of childlline!
