I had my first proper lesson in two years today!!! There isn't really much to report as such but I'm not as bad as I thought I was ! Some of my problems seem to have stemmed from an accident I had nearly 4 years ago and it has made me crooked,I also suffer form general bad habit-itis! Once I was straightened up and had my stirrups put down 5 holes!!! (yes 5 holes!) I was in a much better position, much more secure and was able to ride Rosie properly which meant Rosie went much better too. But as my RI said I don't help myself help Rosie help herself so it was vicious circle! But I think I've sussed it now so we should be breaking out of the vicious circle we had going on! I then focused on making Rosie work from behind properly and she was most confused by this!! lots more work to be done but she is getting the Idea of working not like a camel! I then worked on my jumping position and relevation! If my stirrups are a bit longer I can actually hold my jumping position!! And canter all the way around without collapsing! Not done that for a while, my knee hurts now so I think a knee support will be beneficial (my knee is what I injured 4 years ago) Who knew changing your stirrup length could change so much....Its hard to see what you do wrong and when a fresh pair of eyes sees you, it makes all the difference! Even my RI said that I'm not the bloody awful rider I think I am or something along those lines...and guess who my RI was? My old YO!! She actually gives very good lessons and was very encouraging. I now however ache in places I didn't no existed!

Glad you had a good lesson! If you have the right instructor they can change you so much.

It's good to hear that you had such a good lesson, and with your old YO too! Have you got more planned?

Great stuff. My stirrups have come down 4 holes since I started lessons. I find it very hard to put them up for jumping now! I'm starting to get withdrawl symptoms!

Glad you had such a good lesson! I ride very long for having such short legs so Denise said and it feels really weird and far too short putting them up 2 holes! lol! i feel really unbalanced then!

My old YO wasn't the same woman as last week but she was there. Decided I should have a lesson to see where exactly she thinks I was going wrong and its mainly my stirrups were so short that I was off balance and with a wonky knee that affects me more than I realise because it doesn't hurt but maybe I'm riding differently because I know it will hurt if I ride properly? I ride with a strange head tilt and am wondering if my back and shoulders are seriously out of line because i can feel myself tilting now!! I still find it hard to sit to Rosies canter because I am too big (tall) for her and the saddle isn't made for me but with longer stirrups I was more secure so I was able to be balanced even if I'm not "sitting" Jumping length I only need go up one hole because of the shape of the saddle and the shape of me. I don't hurt as much as I thought I would either today!!
Will try to have more lessons, I had to sign on this week so just waiting for my JSA to arrive or to get a job (whatever happens first!) and then will organise some lessons!

Did she offer for free then? Why not offer to pay her for a lesson and see how it goes. I'm sure she would be pleased to be asked.

I am glad your lesson went so well - I do think you should go to a physio or chiro if you feel out of alignment. I do agree that injuries/faults we have in our own posture can very much affect the horse.

I was given a lesson because I looked after her horse for her one night, Fed him etc. She could also sense that I never wanted to get on a horse every again after my fall couple of weeks ago! Am going to message her and see if she will come up and give me a lesson if I go down to her and sort her horse/s out for her. Or when my money comes through will pay her to come down and help me.
I am going to see a chiropractor I think, something is blatantly not right in myself. I'm stiffer on one side (my strongest side, my left) in my hips, but my right shoulder and knee are are tighter and i tilt my head to the left so I'm actually very wonky. My left arm is also constantly sore on my triceps and if I don't sit in the position my Latissimus Dorsi hurts too!! I actually knew what it was called as well....! I'm only 20, I shouldn't be this crippled already!!! but I suppose having a few crashing falls in the last 3 years will make me sore and achey!
I'm going to take up knitting!

yeah, knowing my luck I would poke myself in the eye or sit on a needle or something!!
Think sitting in a room full of bubble wrap would be the best answer but even then I'd probably suffocate myself!! Just my luck!

It would be an idea to see a chiro or similar as these problem could be sorted whhilst you are young and flexible. If you could do yoga or similar which will help you stretch your body you may find it easier to straighten your self out. At least you recognise you are wonky which is the first stage to getting it sorted!

I know from experience that when there's just one thing wrong in your body, there's a whole domino effect going on to compensate for it. I've had loads of physio and have worked hard on my position and posture (not just riding but in general) and the difference now is amazing. I too used to tilt my head (more than a little) and now I'm straight. Being aware of it is half the battle, so do persevere. Going to a chiropracter will help you pinpoint where to start from. It would be great if you can get some more lessons as well.
