Neighbours next door are selling their 97 reg micra 5 dr and parents are thinking about buying it to sell to me (mums gonna drive it instead of the truck for a bit), the cheapest quote I have managed to get is just over a grand and a half, is that about right? Also what are the rules of being put on my mums insurance, she will be driving it a fair bit i'll just be using it for college, ponies and work (and running mates home after work probably). Any help much appreciated.

I read rules somewhere about it... I got my name put on as second driver and dads as first driver. As long as your mum drives it a fair bit its ok to put your name as second driver - if you put your mums name on as main driver and then she doesnt drive it but you use it all the time then its fraud and you get done for it.
Its a hell of a lot cheaper to do it that way and it is legal as long as your first driver does most of the driving.
*we got the cheapest quote by the post office.

yup going on your mums will not be cheap but will be much cheaper! A lot of companies now will also allow you the take the main persons no claims (if you don't make any of course) after so long...I nicked my OH's (so maybe it has to be a spouse I honestly don't know but were not married) having shared a car with my grandad when I was younger during week for work (I had it all week unless he needed it and it went back at weekends when he kindly filled it up!) and used OH's at weekends.

BD, I used to work in insurance. It is so much cheaper to be added as an additional driver but you can only use the vehicle for social, domestic and pleasure (SDP), not for work / college purposes. My suggestion to get around this is - if stopped while driving to / from college / work to say you are on your way to the shops, as by saying you are going to college/work could imply that you are the main driver and you wouldn't be covered properly. I hope that makes sense.
