I am trying to hook my camcorder up to my laptop. I put in the memory card which opens up the media player but all I get is sound and no picture. The laptop is fairly new and more than capable of playing videos etc but obviously something is going wrong.
Also, I filmed Sues lesson last week and recorded it on my DVD recorder. However her DVD player wouldn't play the disk (mine played it fine) as it said 'not compatible. She gave me a different disk to try but that wouldn't let me record on it as it gave a message saying 'setup is different'. The disk I recorded also wouldn't play on my laptop (though her disk opened up the DVD player on it)
Any advice for a complete technophobe??

What programme are you using to watch the dvd on your laptop? Her DVD player might be set to a different set up or country to yours. Other than that i'm out

For the lack of video playing - its proably the codecs that need updating on the laptop... just make sure you download from a trusted site.
For compatibility Blonde Donkey is probably right in that ur playing different formats. Could also be that u've recorded the disc as video data rather than 'finalising' it into a compatible dvd/video disc that would be read by a dvd player rather thanjust a computer...
Other than that... no idea lol! I just press the buttons and hope for the best with my computers!

This is very unlike me but........... you should have got a disc with your camcorder which you install onto your laptop so that it recognises where your recording came from. Only know this as had the same issue, my camcorder is a panasonic and all my computers (we have five- sadddos that we are) needed the disc installing! After that no probs!

Brig you may have something there. My camcorder is also Panasonic. Hmmm now I just need to find the box it came in!! Arumanii I'm afraid I'm already lost by 'codecs' and 'video data' lol. We have a computer geek mate coming round tomorrow so I'll get him to take a look.
