He was a bit of a beggar at the XC comp yesterday. It was very very hot (and I have a horrid scorched face) and Paco was full of himself. He'd been bucking a bit in the warm-up, just over excited, but cantered nicely up to the judges when we went into the XC field. Did a calm circle in trot before picking up a good canter to the first log and steamed on to the second one. Then had to turn to a corner that he has a problem with - soem old farm machinery that spooks him every single time and ....

as we cantered into it a lorry reversed into the parking lot alongside and that was it - he threw a huge strop. Emergency stop and rear He tried to spin away but I got him back and we trotted round to the next jump with him bent like a banana but once past he stormed over the tyres and threw himself over the contre-bas, although I had to struggle to steer him to the next log which was off at an angle.

It went fine for a while until we had to go back through the dreaded corner with a jump of blue oil drums just before. He almost stopped dead but at the last minute decided to give in and cleared them from what felt like a standstill but probably was no more than a hesitation.
Then he finished the course with no further problems. But I was a bit miffed that he was such a prat and I don't feel that I rode him very well, I think I could have been more positive.

The judges were kind and did not count the rear/spin as a volte which would have been four faults so we were clear but slow and came seventh out of about 25. The teenager and R came eighth in the same class - she picked up four faults for overshooting the contre-bas as they were going so fast.
In the 'big' class at 80cm they went dangerously fast. R approached the first big log in his usual rodeo way and I heard her say

'Well, go on then if that's what you want!' and they streaked off. Total headbanger stuff and utterly dangerous. They shaved a full second off the already wildly fast leader to complete the whole course in 56 seconds. Mad. She was thrilled to win but it has done nothing to help my plans for R's future.

It was my first XC competition and I was pleased that I did not fall off or do something really stupid ;D but I don't think I'll do another one. P is not brave enough and neither am I!!!

Well done, I am always so impressed at the way you give things a go even when you are not sure. 7th out of 25 is very good. Well done to the teenager too. 56 seconds is seriously scarey!

That was an excellent result. I find x-coutry fences so daunting. Even at 2 ft they look huuuge to me. So well done you for having a go. It's all good experience.

BB - Paco isn't it any of the photos But as my 'friend' once said, she didn't want to buy a 'common' horse like all the other white horses down here...... But I don't think I was b•llsy - I rode like an old lady . I think if I had been more gung ho, Paco would not have been so silly. Never mind. There's always next time - oh what have I said???
