As part of my health and social care course I have to go to various places and work with varying ages of people and disabilities. I have a placement coming up in a nursery/pre school. I have never worked with/babysat or have an experience of being around children except out hacking on Bracken when they have patted the pony and I have ridden off after. Any idea's on how to survive a week with 30+ small children?

I worked in one part time for a while when I was in college. What you need - loads of energy!! Other than that - you will be fine, you are used to horses and the psychology is pretty much the same. Just think of them as ponies!! Oh and be very bossy in a nice kind way - Good luck!!!

As long as they are past the nappy stage you'll be just fine! - I don't do bodily functions They are a bit like dogs/horses and can smell fear lol but they also respond well to bribery and corruption if all else fails try to put the fear of god iunto them alas unfortunatly they usually put in in you.

I work with adults with learning disabilities so I'm not sure if you will get the opportunity to do any work experience in this field. If you do, make sure to pm me hun Children like adults to have energy and be whitty but with firm messages - they work best with structure and with creative play. Patience can be the biggest problem, especially if the children have challenging behaviour / disabilities but its amazing how we can adapt and an inner warmth becomes apparent. Good luck with your placement - I'm sure you will love it!!

Copy the teacher!!! We had to do a crappy communication thing with the elderly and P1 children for a few hours and that was pretty stressfull lol!
I know now that i wont be a vet, or work with kiddies or old people. Or look after people in general. lol!

My mums a reception teacher (working with 4/5 year olds), and I've been in to help her loads. The best thing I ever learnt was just to be firm but fair, and never let them see you as a weakling, otherwise they will challenge you on it, and like ceej said, kids can be suprisingly scary! I always try to seem like I'm someone to play with etc, but also someone who you should listen to should I tell you to do/not to do something...if that fails, threaten telling the teacher (or head teacher, whichever is more scary). Personally I quite enjoy going into school with my mum and helping out. I don't know if I could do it all day every day as little kids tire you out! BUT they can be a lot of fun AND I have the excuse of playing with silly childish things like playdough, painting/colouring/glueing and sticking and littles toys such as playmobil, toy horses (my mum has some jousting knights and a full amazingly fun pirate ship - all of which I encourage the kids to play with...for their benefit, obviously ), stuffed teddies and dressing up! That kind of thing suits me down to the ground ;D As for the elderly, I guess you should just be calm, be prepared to talk loud and clear and also have some suitable topics which you can share with those more chatty folks. Oh, and be ready to repeat yourself - either through deafness or just because they all ask very similar questions! I'm sure you'll be fine...what is it you're wanting to do at the end of all this?

The best advice I can give you is to avoid the little beggars as much as possible. Make lots of coffee for the staff, spend a long time in the loo, offer to run errands.....
Good luck. Small kids are ghastly. And en masse they are hideous - all sticky fingers and crappy bottoms. I think I would end up strangling one .....

i love kids, doesnt matter what age they are i will find ut what works for that kid and go from there. whatever the heck you do, do not give in to them, do not go for the but mummy lets me either - it leads to trouble. i used to do loads of babysitting until i started college, still do when i have the time and have looked after 3 month old babies to stroppy 12 year olds - the only kids i cant look after are my borther and sister!!!!!!

Well i have survived my first day. Just. So far i have had three small children trying to put me in the bin, one little girl hugging my leg and telling me repeatedly that she wanted to watch cbeebies at her house and a little girl sitting under a table making owl noises (i didn't actually know she was there and it freaked me out a little). It's been ok but am seriously thinking this is NOT want I want to do lol.

It is difficult i know. ATM i am in process of elimination. I would love to be a nurse but i don't know if i've got the inclination or the patience (excuse the pun). I am at college cos i know for a fact i don't still wanna be working in mcdonalds with the muppets i currently work with for the next ten years.

I'm on a BTEC certificate so we aren't on an exam criteria we just do lots of course work and a couple of work placements. I went to sixth form cos i want other qualifications as well hence me doing History and English literature at AS level and looking to take both onto A2. I think i'm just looking for a way to get away from here to be quite honest. Scarboroughs a tip!!
