Can you tell me how to teach rein back. Peter's reversing leaves much to be desired. He will back up on command un mounted but if i try saying back, and resisting forward movement nothing happens. I know he finds it hard, but what should the aids be, and what should my approach be? Thanks as always.

I think i did a post on this a while back but Kieran wouldnt hardly move back even on the ground lol!!
I think the aids are pressure on reins, say back and slight leg pressure. Try standing facing the fence - he might get the idea quicker then.

When introducing rein back, I also eased my weight very slightly out of the saddle as I applied my legs - it seemed to help my horse know what I wanted- I suppose by freeing up his back a bit. The movement is so subtle now, you wouldn't notice it. I don't know if that is something I read or not so I am not sure if it is the 'correct' way. It has worked really well and JB is pretty good at rein back

The way I teach it is to lean back very slightly in the saddle, really just enough to shift your weight backwards. Take up a fairly firm contact and give a little squeeze with your legs. Sit and wait, and wait, and wait ...... Don't change anything just wait. The horse will try to find the release to the pressure. It will probably put it's head up, then down then sideways. May move forwards or sideways. Again, just hold your position and sit and wait. The second the horse so much as thinks backwards - be it just an ear flicking back - release everything off and praise. Then try again.

it may also help to have someone on the ground helping direct the backwards movement, they then seem to understand better

Teach it on the ground first by placing the hand on the chest and saying back till they he will do it with just the voice aid then use the voice aid onboard whilst doing as Duckles suggested. This is the method I use anyhow but had both of mine a long time before they were able to be ridden so did a lot of voice training especially with Murph.
