Hi my best friends daughter id 14, nearly 15, and she wants to be a vet... Ali, my friend, went with Harley (the daughter) to an information evening at school, where they advertise colleges etc.. one of the ladies, advertising holy cross college (in bury - if anyone knows it??) said that to get into a veternairy uni she not only has to get A and A* at GCSE's, and A's at A levels, but she has too get work experiance, with animals. she loves horses, and is a very good rider, so she is going to ask out at her riding stables if theyd let her help out.. but she still needs to work with other animals... so we've thought of animal charities, pet shops, vets, but we cant think of anymore.. got any ideas of where she can help out? she's willing to get her hands dirty, and isnt expecting pay.. thanks in advance

I think Vets and animal charities would be best. I know our vets always have youngsters in during the summer helping out. My sister did one summer (she was hoping to be a vet) What about dog walking? Working on a farm, small holding or fishery? I did here that the colleges like people who work with a lot of different animals - they don't like people who only work with horses. They also say that vet colleges are full of girls who become vets because they love horses and never get the time to ride again or even own a dog!

Vet school is very hard to get into there is also the cost involved when i was going in 2005 they were in the region of 10k a year and you can not work as in the holidays you have to do work experience.
I would also say keep your options open, even if she gets A*'s and has all the work experience she may not even get a interview like one of my friends she was totally devastated
I would really recommend working at a vet's having to help hold animals while there pts is hart breaking. It may be she decides it's not for her
