I went for a hack up the forest today with another livery (A) and her horse Flash. Straight from the off Flash was spooking at everything, napping and burled around on the road knocking into Murphy. We managed to get them walking on again, Murphy was spooky after that, I was anxious too and probably Murphy could feel it.
At the forest, Flash wanted to take lead and A wanted to canter him up the first hill to kill a bit of his energy and Murphy took off after him - I could hardly keep hold of Murphy but eventually we came back to trot and then walk. All wasn't going too bad until we turned for home, I decided to try another small canter but Flash was having none of it following - he wanted in front. A tried her best to hold him but he overtook us and he kicked me and Murphy - luckily he only hit my boot but it still hurt, I think he got murphy in the chest. Well Flash was out of control, bucking and leaping about, Murphy wasn't much better as he wanted to catch up but I held him not so bad although he was shaking at his head - pulling me all over the place to allow him to take off. One of the most frightening times I've had and I had no body protector on (stupid I know) and he tried to get me off a few times. I stayed on thankfully - just. I wanted to get off but A reasured me and I took deep breathes and it relaxed me a little - even if I had of got off I probably wouldn't have been able to hold him and he would have bolted down the lane of the forest after Flash *doesn't bear thinking about. Flash kicked out at Murphy a few times after that but we managed to get back unscaved! I h

OMG DB!!
What a nightmare. I would have been scared sh*tless! I can sympathise with wanting to get off - ive done it many times before actually when i just couldnt bear to stay on i was that scared.
I think it was a bit mean of A to go on ahead cantering without you - thats what happened when me and my auntie went on a hack - she just cantered off up the lane without even asking if that was ok and i knew Kieran was likely to take off so i booted on after her and he just rodeoed. So actually come to think of it it didnt make much difference following or being took off with lol!!
I think you deserve a big hug and pat on the back for being brave and most importantly controlling Murphy and staying on!!! WELL DONE!!!
I hope Murphy is ok.
Did you think the martingale helped?
I bet youll not be doing that again any time soon lol!

Oh DB, we all have those hacks, but they can be very frightening at the time, but look at the positives Flash was basically misbehaving and whislt Murphy wanted to muck about up kept him under control and stayed which is not that easy when they want to misbehave.
Speak to A and set some ground rules when out hacking, something I firmly believe in is always asking if you want to canter and if I want to keep it steady I wiull ask H to make sure she keeps Chomps steady or we will let each other know if we are going for a mad one.
When behind they always want to ctach up so you did well.

Fi, thats the thing, I thought I had set some ground rules before we started. I explained Murphy was just coming back into work and I would be wanting to take it pretty easy, especially as Murphy hadn't been in the forest before and I wasn't sure how he would react. I just don't think she wanted me to slow her down. I suppose its not great having a slow coach hacking out with you ;D
Flea, I didn't wear the martingale in the end as I didn't have any stoppers - will defo get those this week tho.

DB you did great. You stayed on, you had control. Any horse is likely to get a bit worked up if their companion is taking the P**s! I saw a number of these at Burghley - horses everywhere! I would suggest you find someone a bit calmer to hack with - or be honest with A and say you will go again, but you want to stick to walk and trot only for now (then if you fancy a canter and the neds are behaving well you can, but if not you've told her). Hope Murphys recovered from Flash's flying hooves.

Well done Danny Boy.
Sorry but your friend sounds like a right idiot to me and no wonder her horse behaves as it does if that is how she goes off when she hacks out.
Is there anyone sane you can hack out with instead?

DB, you should move here and come out hacking with me and Mattie. We don't do anything other than walk and a bit of trot at the minute and hes never ever contemplated taking off with me (one good thing about race horses I suppose!)
I need a nice quiet "slow coach" horse to come out with me lol
But on a serious level, its down right dangerous and she obviously has no manners and doesn't care what would happen if she went on ahead. Hope you're okay now xx

Mossh, I'm moving ;D Mattie sounds lovely!!
I don't think I'll be out any time soon with A - I need to chill for a while. I ache all over today - muscles I never realised I had!
Heading up to Murphy in a while, just hope he's fine. I think I took most of the blow tbh on my Mountain Horse Boots - boy do I love those tough old boots.

I think my boots would have had a hole punched in them - in the inside they are wearing into holes on the ball of my foot and i can feel all the stones - ow!

I'm glad you are ok (other than muscle bruising). I have known people to get their leg's broken in similiar sitiuations and I got a bad ankle injury from a kick like that. I am sure Murphy is ok. I am somewhat confused - there are 2 threads like this??? I have been posting on the other one!! I hope you don't feel too shaky after yesterday - I think you are right to give hacking with A a miss for a while

Avoid A like the plague! This could easily have had a very different ending.
Personally, I think a fizzy horse is better hacked out calmly. I know that if R is a bit full of himself, the more he gallops, the more he expects to and instead of getting the tickle out of his toes it makes him hideously strong and jittery.
Also, you were right to want a gentle hack: Murphy has only just come back into work, hasn't he? Mad gallops through the forest are not ideal for him yet.

Racaille, I was quite cross with A as she was fully aware that Murphy was just coming back into work again and I wanted to take things slow. I don't think she though she was doing any harm but I've certainly learnt my lesson about hacking out with her.
I was up with Murphy last night and he's not tender where he got kicked, I think I took most of the blow! His legs, leading down to his hocks look swollen tho, although not warm to touch and he's not lame. I gave him a good rub / massage myself but I think I may enquire about a physio - even if he doesn't need it, sure we all love a good rub.

DB - ill hack out with you even though i have no horse lol!! I hate going fast in company, it scares the crap out of me (unless i was on Connie) so we could just doddle round the roads together chatting away - ah bliss. I used to sit on Connie with reins on the buckle and dander round the roads chatting away - it was great.
DB, maybe he just needs a wee rest in his field for a few days, he probably puffed himself out after his hoolying around on Sunday! I cant advise you on physios, we only had one out to Connie the once but i dont know if she was that well recommended.

A was well out of order and I wouldnt ride with her again. I had a similar situation some time ago DB, all the people at the yard where I was wanted to canter and their horses were jumping out of their skin. Fizzy horses need lots of relaxing walks and long steady trots on slopes to keep them sane- then you canter when they are calm enough and fit enough. Sounds like you coped well though, well done.

About the phyiso: It certainly won't hurt to get one out and also a chiropracter. I don't know any in your area though (obviously) lol I use one regularly on Mattie and she worked wonders and made him rideable again when I first had him. Also if his legs are a bit puffy, maybe some magnotherapy boots, not cheap but they have worked wonders for some horses I know, might be worth seeing if you can borrow a pair first?

Oh, i read a thread about that on a local forum DB. Magnetic boots or something. Will get a link for you if you like.
But perhaps getting too expensive here!! Would the puffiness not go down on its own as hes living out?
