We went out on a little hack tonight in the lovely woods, had a nice canter, horses behaving really well. Even went past a man eating digger, then we saw another horse and Peter got all silly. Spooking at nothing arching his neck, snorting right up on his toes. When we got back onto the road, he cantered two strides on the tarmac! He has never done that before! Any one else have a horse that can't cope with seeing another ridden beasty?

We met a horse and rider today and Kieran just doddled along as normal - he even stood really still when they went up the road away from him and a huge tractor went past. Although it was a different story at the pleasure ride! eek!
As for the other horse, it was working itself up and kept reversing and sitting back on his bum and spinning and napping a bit - i was crapping myself just watching it.
Well done for coping with Peter, i think you did really well.

We very rarely see other horses but mine get all silly and on their toes too. (Their are hoof marks in parts of the woods but we have seen other horses once out hacking so far this year).
I put it down to the fact that they are so isolated where they are it's like WOW another horse!
They even race around the field in excitement on the very very rare occasion a horse goes by or when endurance rides are on and they can see them going down edge of common from their field.

Fires really good, our neighbour has 7 horses and they can be galloping up and down and he'll just plod along and ignore them. The only one he ever had that he didn't like was a minature fallabella stallion who would sneak up behind him then squeal and go galloping off We bumped into my friend who was going the other way at the weekend and he was really great. Same when we used to meet our neighbors horses out hacking. Pigs however.....

Mine used to get like Peter. We used to encounter quite a few others out hacking and some he wouldn't react to much at all but others would provoke the growing tall, prancing and blowing, neck arching etc. I think it's more to do with hormones/dominance than anything. We had some colts at our yard and he really went into stallion mode when they were near the fence when we passed!

I think I've been very lucky with my lot - all of them are fine meeting other horses, although Lu got wound up at a meet once - her and another horse were winding each other up!!! Usually they were both fine! Not sure on P yet as not hacking yet, but she does try to join in when the horses in the field next to the school kick up - but that's just her age.

Mattie met other horses out hacking and promptly sat on the floor like a dog and gazed in wonder...he forgets he is a horse.
Friends horse launched into a string of 7 big bucks down the road repeatedly when he was overtaken on hacks but is getting better slowly (hes 18!)
