When we were cleaning out Murphy's feet, I noticed that on is right fore hoof the frog is coming away! Does this skin shed or could it be something more serious. He doesn't seem to be lame, there's no heat and the rest are in good nick. Should I be worried for is this normal?

He could have had a touch of thrush as this often causes the frog to come away slightly (or more than slightly, depending on the severity of the thrush). Faith's frogs do it quite frequently, regardless of how clean and dry the ground/her bed is so I wouldn't worry too much...just get the farrier to trim it off next time he's out and Murphy will be none the wiser

If he is due to see the farrier soon, it's normal. It's just excess frog peeling away as it grows. The farrier will trim it all nice and neat again ;D

Yes, he's due to see the farrier this Tuesday. So that's good at least it's nothing to worry about. Thanks. x

Yes frogs do shed. Sometimes in little bits, sometimes the whole thing in one piece. It's impossible to say without seeing pictures but it could just be shedding but it could also be infection. A healthy frog should not have any jagged edges and should have a dent/shallow thumb print in the middle. If the middle (central sulcus) is deeper than a shallow thumb print you may have infection (and then again you may just have contracted heels). If the farrier is coming on Tuesday ask him what he thinks.

Oh forgot to say. I assume because you've been looking at his frogs that you've got to grips with getting him to lift up his feet! Well done.

Sometimes they peel off a bit when youre picking them out - I have also seen the whole thing loose too!! But never worried about it and the farrier didnt either cos i asked him about the peely bits - it was either princess or connie had a peeled off bit and the frog looked like the texture of a starfish, it really grossed me out but farrier just got the scrapy thing out and it was back to normal!!
