I have a friend who said that "no bute" (I think that's what it's called) worked well for her horse. Mine has been on bute for years and will continue with it as he is now 25. It can cause liver damage so I would always consider the age of the horse before making up my mind. If it shortens his life by a few months, then so be it as whilst taking it the quality of his life is so much better. Regular checks by the vet are also a must.

florence how much does it cost you to be on bute all the time? Willow has been pretty stiff this winter and I am pretty sure the old creaking arthritis is setting in, although I am sure he will only need it in the winter - summer herelds a much comfier time (so far). I wouldnt worry too much about long term effects with him as he is 25 his year. But I imagine it costs a pretty penny...

I have a 40yr old pony who's on half a sachet of Bute a day!
I normally get mine from the vets and pay £12:50 for a 30 day month supply or you can get prescription drugs from a website called Hyper drug!
My vet did say to me that at my pony's age it wont do any long term damage to her internal organs, altho I do know it will do some damage! She is only on half a sachet a day then have gotta wean her off it in the summer too see how she copes then put her back on it in the winter if she is still with us!

I get it from the vet and have done for years now, but I've just found out that you can ask for a prescription and get it from the internet. The only thing with that may be that my vet may say he'll want to see him every six months for checks. Which will make it less economical to buy on the net. Anyway, I'll look into it later as I've just bought a box. I use one per day and there's 100 per box. It was costing £66.21 per box but it's gone up and I can't find a recent bill. I'll post the correct price when I find it. (When I get round to the huge pile of filing I've been scrabbling around in )

Have a look at petmeds.com. I get all the flea treatments and wormers for my cats from there and they are much cheaper. They do equine items as well but obviously I don't know how those compare.
