Tonight after taking P's boots off, I ran my hand down his leg to feel if they were sweaty and felt a large lump just below his knee. Now this may have been there before and I've not noticed as it's quite high, but I'm not sure. I was like OMG whats that?!? Theres no heat, he's certainly not lame. Its very hard - boney rather than swollen and is on the inside of his leg just below the knee. Any ideas. If it was lower down I'd be thinking it might be a large splint but can they go that high? What should I do? as not sure of it's origin and no lameness etc, should I just keep an eye on it or would you get the vet just incase?

Sounds like a splint, if theres no heat or swelling are you sure it wasnt there before? They can be as high as that. Given his age he is bound to have all sorts of lumps and bumps. If he is sound and theres no discomfort to direct pressure or in his paces I wouldnt worry. The other thing to consider is it could be a pressure spot from his boots- if thats the case change boots and cold hose for a few days- but this seems unlikely!

bound to be a splint given the area. It will have been there for ages and not bothered him- if it was the boots it would not be hard and cold - a splint is calsified bone hence the hardness.

Phew, panic over - it was there before. I have been checking back on photos and zooming in and I can clearly see it in one - thats why I can't believe how I haven't noticed before as its quite big. I have now familiarised myself with everysingle part of his limbs If splints can go that high then I suspect thats what it is. That was a real heart in mouth moment!!
