brought horses in from the field last night and chompy who had a loose shoe had managed to pull it half off. The farrier is booked for Monday but as it still had nails sticking out I thought it probably should come off.
I phoned my instructor for a bit of advice and while she couldn't come down to help she did lend me her tools (only lives a 5 minute drive away) and give me a comprehensive set of instructions as to how to do it properly.
Thank goodness Chompy is good with his feet he only snatched he foot away once as I was attempting to straighten the clenches out so I ccould pull the nails out from the bottom. I was taking quite a long time about it as I am no farrier.
I am feeling quite pleased with myself for taking it off properly, not causing any more damage and he was so obviously more comfortable once it was off.

Well done you, had to pull a shoe off the other day too. I was lucky there was a few people around to help, it's not as easy as the farriers make it look is it?

Well done - quite a scary thing to do when you think about it as it involves nails!

We were taught it in college - very useful as nothing worse than a half pulled shoe.

Hee hee, we learned this too - and what the farrier makes look effortless is a real b*gger! The worst bit was putting the shoe back on again (using the same holes). All of us, at one time or another, managed to nail our fingers to the poor horse's hoof. Ouch.
