Recipes for repellent please!
I'm going to make my own - but remember Paco is white so cold tea is probably a no-no and I can't get British products, but generics are fine.
Here's hoping!

I think I posted a thread on homemade repellent when the board was first set up. Will see if i can get it up - if not ill look it up in one of my books. ....*tootles off* Found the thread but dont seem to have the recipes - will go off and get the book now! thepaddocks.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=health&action=display&thread=97For the paddock/fieldMix equal amounts of water and fruit vinegar with a shot of 'Frenchman Oil' (lol!!) - apparently its available from pharmacies. For hackingMix grapefruit seed extract (available from pharmacy) according to instructions on the package. 2 in 1 - Field and HackingMix equal amounts of water, fruit vinegar and eucalyptus bath oil with some clove or lavender oil (approx 15ml oil per litre). Essential oils must be diluted. Not sure if thats any help - also have a homemade itch prevention solution in the book. Mix 500ml baby oil with 50 drops of citronella oil, 20 drops of eucalyptus oil, 20 drops of cedar wood oil, 20 drops of clove oil, 10ml tea tree oil and 50ml of black caraway seed oil and rub into mane and tail on a daily basic.

I keep meaning to make my own but never get round to it so end up doing a mad dash to countrywide (or similar) when I realise I've run out of fly stuff! A groom I used to work with used to make her own - I can't remember the exact recipe but it included cold tea, washing up liquid and citronella oil. we had a grey horse on the yard and it didn't seem to stain him but he was a bit speckly! let us know if you find a good recipe that works.

I read that Italians put baby oil on the horse's dock and sheath and that keeps the flies away!. It seemed such a cheap easy solution that it stuck in my mind but I have never really tried it out as last summer was so wet that we didn't really have trouble with flies- however I did buy some fly stuff this year(and I can't remember the name) and you only have to put it on once a week! on the dock, sheath and base of mane. So far it seems to be working well.

Well Duckles, how brilliant are you!!! I just never made the connection - I put Vaseline in their ears, and it works really well, so baby oil on other bits is a great idea!

Murphy seems to be getting bite marks and the flies are unbearable and really annoying him - which spray should I use, bought or make my own? is there anything I could do this morning as a quick fix?

Well, one you buy is quick and handy - we have always just bought fly spray but we are thinking of mixing up a homemade one although mum says she doesnt know where you would get half the stuff on the one i suggested - maybe the health shop? Think Kieran is getting bitten too and hes rubbing his mane at the top so will have to get something sorted.

Ha ha Bay, love the sound of this but don't think I could give up my precious Marmite for fly spray - it costs a fortune here, when I can find it, that is!!

Avon skin so soft does work- dont know why but its ace and is lovely for tails and manes as well. Just be careful with oil based ones in sunny climates though- best put in some sun block just to make sure!
Parafin is good but the smell is just so awful! I did use it but cant stand the smell anymore!
