Just out of curiosity, what would I say to the vet to get him to let me have xrays done? Would I need to take Faith to a specialist or could a regular vet do the xrays? (I would definiately take her to a speicalist if she needed anything doing, but do we reckon my regular vet could give a diagnosis?). Also, any ideas of costs of xrays? (And how do they do them? Would she have to go into a veterinary hospital? )

No idea about back x-rays but my old horse had x-rays on her back legs and we went to the hospital for it - but she was having nerve blocks & all sorts done too. I think vets do have portable x-ray equipment - not sure if it can do their backs. Sorry not much help really am I

When Dexter was being diagnosed as a wobbler he spent 1.5 days at my vets where they xrayed all down his neck to find the problem as he had to be sedated in order to stand still and they also have stocks to keep him in one place, then it was off to the vet school in Glasgow where he was scheduled to have a bone scan - really scary they inject them with radio-active dye and see where it goes. He would have been in for 3 or 4 days for that, but by that stage his xrays were pretty clear and it wobblers was diagnosed so he didn't have to undergo the bone scan.
One thing to check is whether your insurance will cover it, the bone scan was going to cost over £900 so I got agreement that the insurers would cover it before he was booked in.

roo had to go to the vet's it's cheaper that way they have to be sedated as well to keep them still, Roo woke up half way though opps, they develop them there and then so you can see them. if you have it done at your yard they have to take them back to be developed and if there at the wrong angle you have to pay for them to come out agane. they also take a long time 3 pic's took 2-3 hours for Roo.

It's best to go to vet hosp I'd say as the portable machines pics were not nearly so good when the vet came out to me when Murph first had lami...then again technology moves very quickly and that was 4 yrs ago.
At vet hosp, what 2 months later, they were done and on the PC for us to see within about 5 minutes...also they could zoom in on them etc whereas the others had been developed on old fashioned plates (correct term?) and she had to do them back at the vets and phone us then I collected them for the farrier as they didn't turn out when she did them in the unit whilst with us.
