My friend's mare nearly collapsed on the yard yesterday. Pretty terrifying, she just went weak at the knees, literally. She managed to stop herself going down completely, but grazed her hock and pastern in saving herself. My friend was on her at the time! They called the vet out who treated her for colic, and took some blood. The thing is this mare has been struggling to put any weight on since winter, she looks pretty thin. It's normal for her to struggle a bit to keep condition but i think they now suspect some underlying cause. She is a 16.3. trakhener 14 years old. Vet was really good checked her all over, any ideas?

Could be anything really Solomon, severe worms or damage caused by same, cancer or some other tumour, blood disorder, heart problems. She may simply be dehydrated. Poor thing sounds poorly though but at least they are checking it out properly!

Good it;s being checked out as as above could be anything. My old pony Sunny collapsed one day coming in from field...he had been diagnoised with various deficincys and other problems at the time ( he was losing weight, not eating and generallylethargic etc etc) and was extremley ill so it was attributed to part of this (he was out for a bit as grass was all he would eat)...hate to say it he actually never recovered and just as we thought he was improving he gave up the fight *sorry probably totally wrong thing to answer with*
On a lighter note...Murph collapsed almost once (sunk to his knees), it was very soon after backing and as my saddle is treless the girths are dressage style and right under the belly...well I had been having help doing them up so as not to unsettle him but this day it was my OH doing it....as he started to sink realisation hit me....he's only gone and done the bloody girth so flippin tight he was about to pop!!!....and I screamed undo it and he slowly rose back up again....he's NEVER been allowed to tighten one since to this day...I always check them for him if he rides!
