Ok I have a wierd one for you! In case you dont know, my ID Major is a grey (white) and he is in his late teens. He is fleabitten which has increased as him summer coat has come through. Anyway about a week or 2 ago I noticed a jet black spot on his fur. It looked like someone had dyed it or dabbed him with a stick of charcoal but really black and really perfectly circular. I just figured that a bit of dust or something had falled from the dusty roof in his stable and over the past few weeks have just tried to dust it off (with no luck) when grooming. Today I had just let him out and I noticed that the black spot had turned into a scab I didnt realise it was a scab and picked it as I thought it was some dried secretion (sp?) from one of the trees from the day before but when I picked it off it was actually a scab! I am now trying to stay calm (as I am a known worrier) but I just wondered if anyone else has ever experienced this (probably grey owners) and if they know what it is? It looked like a cig burn but the black mark before couldnt have been because there was no fur which had singed (sp?) etc Anyone?

I dunno but Kieran is actually fleabitten grey too - hes getting brown speckles! Anyway - he had wee crusty things on his bum that were scabs and we picked them off and put some herbal cream or wound powder on them. Theyre all cleared up now so dont know what it was.
I would just keep an eye out and put some wound powder or cream or something on it.

Did you say it was perfectly circular? It could be ringworm...I've never seen it on horses, only on me, but mine started out looking like a perfectly circular cigarette burn and slowly grew into a massive red ring of soreness that needed cream and keeping covered. Don't mean to worry you, but like Flea and Jack have said, keep an eye on it, but if it gets any bigger then you might want to call the vet and get some cream (if it is ringworm anyway )

i cant think if ringworm spreads from one horse to the other just something for you to check have a good look at the babys im sure they will be fine but as they came from someone that didnt care about them its worth checking them to be safe but its proberly just a scab its that time of year

Ringworm can spread and its passed on by contact...I got mine from touching a gate the pony (not mine) had been leaning on Has any of the hair gone around the area? Or is it just a scab under the fur? (I'm feeling its less and less likely to be ringworm but I'd still keep an eye on it and phone the vets if needs be

Nah the fur was black and then the fur turned into a scab and the raw skin obviously had no fur. Will put some cream on and take a pic tomorrow

I think you should get the vet to have a look. The reason Im saying this is because grey horses are notorious for getting sarcoids which is what this could be. If it is then you will have to decide whether to treat it (various treatments available) or leave it. Once you know if it is a sarcoid then you can research the various options and plenty of members have experience of them. If you look up Derek Knottenbolt on google you will find he is a leading expert on all things sarcoid and there are plenty of pics etc for you to compare. Seriously neighlass- dont delay in getting it identified so you know what you are dealing with.

Thank you for that. The vet will be coming to see Daisy soon for a vaccination (next Tuesday) so will get her to look then. The place where I picked the scab is just like a scab you would hve on your arms or something. It is just healing. Will keep you informed.

Also can you do a pic as it would be interesting to see as it could also be ringworm or even just a bite! (lets hope!)

Grey horses are also very vulnerable to melanoma (and I've got two greys ) so a diagnosis is essential.

Ah I recognise that! Princess had one on her hock when we got her - it looks like a puncture wound a bit - never found out what caused it but nothing ever came of it and it healed well - it looks as if its already healing. Still - worth a vets opinion!

Could be a wound, could be a sarcoid (is it depressed or raised- as cant tell)- let us know what the vet thinks as its certainly interesting!

looks sarcoidish (is there such a word?) and with him being a grey melanoma is the biggie - we shall wait to hear what the vet says.

Looks a bit sarcoidy I think too....it isn't/couldn't be a tick?
I ask because last summer i though Harry had a sarcoid growing on his bits but after a couple of days it just vanished/dropped off or whatever with nothing to show really. Shepherd thinks it was tick (and we had some of his sheep visiting at the time) although he never actually saw it...

In the first month I got Basil he showed marks on his inside hind legs near the sheath. they disappeared after a couple of months (well before the main sarcoid emerged) and I think they were sarcoids, but only realised it after doing some research on the Knuttenbolt site Zara posted. I think they were probably caused by the stress of the sales and moving etc and went once he settled down. Interesting that he then got the one I had removed.
