I was grooming today and noticed a lump on JB's side- fairly central on his body but nearer belly than top of back. It is a perfect circle about the size of a coffee mug in diamater. It is raised a little less that a centimetre from the skin and is completely hard. He didn't mind me poking it. I thought of flies but could see no puncture mark. It looks horrible. The hair is not affected
Any ideas??? He was 2 days in a field that has marshy bits so it could be a bite

Sounds very much like a bite but one where he has had a big reaction. Try a bit of human anti itch cream on it to see if it helps (think its called Eurax)

Sounds like the horse fly we call a 'taon' - big Concorde things that will jab you even through your joddies. They itch like crazy at first, then bring up that hard, hot circle that lasts for quite a while. They have such sharp 'spears' that the horses often bleed a few drops but it all goes down eventually. Like a super-size mosquito.

Definately sounds like a bite of some sort. With this hot and damp weather all sorts of horrid things are creeping out the woodwork.

Thanks all- its gone now so I reckon it was a bite. The field is in now has no marshy bits so hopefully all will be well for a while but going to get some of the creams recommended in the flies thread for the summer. Scatty - wish we had hot and damp weather - its cold and wet here!!

Uurg. Well we had a wet weekend but it's been really warm and humid too, just the sort of weather the creepy crawlies seem to like. Sun is finally out today (just as I go back to work!)
