make sure your wearing gloves as the bit's are sharp, i use a soft sponge and sheath cleaner with a drop of hibiyscrub in a bucket of warm water. then just keep changing the water after i use another sponge with baby oil and put that on the vet said it helps stop the build up. Farley never gets it out but you can still clean it. It's a gross job but it has to be done so often i do Farley's ever mouth if not more.

He he Solomon, I've just had the same thing with Patrick - I knew there was a reason all my other horses have been mares!! It;s just yucky. I took the plunge yesterday!

Sorry soloman it's a case of rolling your sleeve up and getting in there I'm afraid.
The only one I ahve ever known who would get it out to clean was an old pony of my friends as a child...I will find a pic of him later as he was so cute, a real live thelwell....anyhow on producing a bucket of grub his would magically appear and stay till the grub ran out!
I just use warm water and a flannel as spongues are a bit cumbersome if it's tucked away, although I always have baby wipes in my grooming box so if they are ever 'putting in an appearance' I can grab one quick.

That is so funny!
Baby oil is great, it really does prevent the build up! Once clean apply liberally, i keep some on the stable wall to put on if he drops it out!

You won't believe me - or you'll think I'm the worst owner ever but ..... I've NEVER cleaned Paco's sheath in five years.
He's a very private boy and will only pee hiding away in his paddock so I have to lurk to have a look .... but it always looks beautifully clean. (I do know the difference as there are other boys that are simply disgusting).
Is it possible that he is the self-cleaning model?

Neighlass that had me in stitches!
Oscar flops his out constantly! That is until he sees me approaching with the gloves, bucket and baby oil....
But he will always get it out if i give his bun a good scatch, failing that if i tickle him just behind his sheath will also get the desired result. lol

Racaille- glad to read your post as I have never done it either. Don't think it would disgust me though- its just a combination of reading an article saying it wasn't necessary and was bad for them and neither of them being dirty

That's interesting Duckles, would love to read that article if you can find a ref for it? I've never fiddled with Racaille either. It does seem a bit dim of nature to design something that can't self-clean. What happens to horses in the wild?

Oh dear oh dear!!! Patricks is disgusting - crispy bits and all!! MInd he's got 22 years of crud up there! I do also clean Sancy's titties regularly as they seem to get covered in black cruddy stuff.

Ah - so is Kierans - theres bits peeling off it but as soon as you start poking at it it disappears! I used to clean Connies and Princesses too - cleaning theirs seems to be a less gross job for some reason! lol! The disadvantage of having a gelding hehe!
Anyway - good point racaille - how do horses in the wild do?

It gets regular use unlike our geldings!! no such thing as a wild gelding ( well not in that sense!)
