As some of you may recall I totted up how much I spent on AJ last yera and was shocked that i spent £400 on supplements! So i decided to re-assess the "need" and stopped giving him the Blue Chip Karma at £28 / month thinking that it wasn't really doing very much. Anyway I gradually noticed a difference and so did my friend who rides him now and again that he was getting more tense and nervy when out and being a bit of a handfull. it suddenly dawned on me that his behaviour started to deteriorate about 3 - 4 weeks after stopping the calmer. I have restarted him on "Feelgood 30 - calmer" (much cheaper than Blue Chip) and after just 10 days there has been an improvment. Yesterday i took him out and went up a steep track where last time he got very excited and dragged me up snorting and bucking, yesterday he walked up calmly on a loose rein and even stood quietly for 10 mins while I chatted to a friend.
Now I know that magnesium based calmers don't help every horse but now having stopped and started I realise that they do help AJ and in turn my confidence Zx

yep - I am just about to try some with Brave, as I know we are in a magnesium poor soil type, here so will keep you posted as to how we get on as he and every other horse I have moved here have all gone loopy after a couple of weeks of being here. And Brave really does have his moments...

Another (hopefully cheaper) way to do it is just to buy pure mag or mag ox direct from a supplier. I know of a couple of suppliers (if you want to PM me) but you can probably find someone via a Google search.

I found all this very interesting- I was always a bit cynical about calmers before. How can you find out if your land is rich or poor in any mineral??

Thank you fro the replies everyone, it has certainly been interesting stopping the calmer and then re-starting. Thankyou for the link to "Metabolic Horse" I've e-mailed them for advice re: magnesium and joint supps - will keep you posted Zxx

you just get a soil test kit, and do it yourself of you can get it done professionally, the farmer who owns the field surrounding mine had the soild tested when he bought the land and it returned the low magnesium reading and I think it was high in potassium. Its all to know what fertilisers he should be using.

Hmm do you think a calmer would help stop the Doof getting so stressed when I take Patrick out for a ride - I know already that she will be galloping round and calling like mad (even if Snots is still with her!)

I put Travers on Formula4Feet when he got laminitis. It has a lot of magnesium in it and many micronutrients. When he came back into work I noticed that he was much calmer and less inclined to spook, but put this down to him having been so ill. Also he is getting older. Two years on he is in full work, still up for ten mile hacks, a bit of cross country, M&M showing, pleasure rides and Trec. He shows no signs of aging apart from his fine set of rabbit teeth. He is 21 now. He is still much quieter and less inclined to spook. Formula4Feet is not advertised as a feed balancer. It costs about 74p a day. Hope this helps. Wu
