Noticed Bern has been drinking lots recently. been finishing his bucket and then if he can reach it through the gate stars too.
He did have a couple of those nice pink natural salt licks in his side of the barn which i have taken out. (i always thought horses judged quite well with those sorts of things but maybe he went overboard). just seems odd this time of year?
He still seems bright eyed and bushy tailed, pleased to see me, plays in the field, not dehydrated (pinch test).
not panicking yet but any clues?

How much would he normally drink at this time of year? Is his workload the same?

I dont know.....Connie drank loads and peed loads but she was old..i wonder was that just a sign of old age?
I think you should just keep an eye on it and give your vet a ring to see what he/she thinks - they know best! Ive learnt that from experience!

He never used to empty a bucket, even in summer which is when he does more work. he lives out most of the time which makes it hard to monitor but the times he would come in he didn't drink much, saying that the grass was lusher. work is non existant at the mo

Just googled it Becca and there are lots of things associated with excessive thirst - and some are nothing to worry about at all. But (you knew there'd be a but, didn't you?) there are others that need treating, like Cushings, which if treated early is not a prob. Best get it checked out if it goes on. It may be he just took a chunk out of his salt block, but if he seems unnaturally thirsty without it and not in work, I'd be happier calling a vet.
Random thought: you haven't changed his diet/hay or anything?

my three have all been drinking loads in the last few days but then so have I, the air has been really cold and dry with me making us all thirsty at least that is what I am putting it down to, also they are getting more hay than usual as I have seen any grass for at least 2 weeks as it has been buried under the white stuff.

Rac, he has recently been put on a new joint suppliment, and jack/fi yeah could be that he comes in at night on hay, one of the others is going hay mad putting it in every field.
he seems his perky self, so i will leave it a couple of days to get the salt lick out his system if he did get a chunk.
will google other early symptoms to look out for in regards to cushing etc just in case
cheers though guys

i must say, when i saw the title of the thread and that it was started by becca that it would be about alcohol!!!!
i agree with the others that he is drinking with eating his hay as i was always told that horses drink more as hay is so dry. just keep an eye on it but im sure he will be fine!!

Of course I didn't think that your babies have a different diet in winter (ours are on hay all year round, obviously) and it could be something as simple as that.

Only just read this, but the week before I went away our two were drinking lots more than usual. No hay or changes to explain it, but they have gone back to normal now.
