Final update... Ronan's swab came through yesterday and it is clear. ;D ;D He has to have his blood tested once more, next Tuesday and if that is ok then he can mix with the other horses again...the wee mare has also to have blood taken next Tuesday, she didn't have a swab but her first bloods were ok. She wasn't quarantined because she didn't have a cough/snotty nose. Murphy, on the other hand, has to undergo more stringent testing. He may be a carrier so they are going to scope him and take blood. It seems he may need his gutteral pouches flushed to getb rid of the infection. Sound unpleasant and expensive......

Oh goody - Ronan is ok!!! As for strangles carriers - don't you think euthanising all of them is a bit OTT? The name of it makes it sound worse than it is, but unless you've had experience of strangles then you can't really make a judgement on just how bad it really is. When the vet rold me Faith could have got strangles, I was in flood of tears for atleast an hour, thinking she was going to die, but strangles, although admittedly worse, is just an overblown cold that looks yucky and is a complete pain in the bum to treat! I know of 'bastard strangles' where the abscesses form inside the horse, obviously making it more difficult to treat, is worse than the general form but like I said, it really isn't as bad as it sounds. Faith had it, got over it and is now clean and clear and happy as larry (well...on the cold front anyway). I'm not sure how carriers work (I know that Irish horses - sweeping statement here - are generally just left to their own devices if they come down with strangles because it helps them build up immunity against it, and if what I've been told is true, they can only catch it once, so once they're immune then they're safe) but I'm sure theres no need for euthanisation - thats just madness! Like I said, Faith has had it and is now over it and clean. No one else on our new yard has had any form of a cold (even when Faith did) so she can't have spread anything...I think strangles has a far worse reputation than it deserves. Ok, so immediate isolation is necessary because it is highly contagious (any goo from the abscess can spread the bug), but other than that... Oh and thanks for all the concern about hairy pony - she's fine. Cold has gone. Scabby bits have vanished (could have been bites or could have been the start of abscesses that have now gone because her body is immune) and she's happy and well and you'd never know she even had a cold! Virkon is always on hand these days though...better to catch it early and be safe than wait a while and be sorry!!!!

Hello Not been posted on here much for ages as I've been v. busy but been reading now and then when I get the chance. Brilliant for you Ronansmum that it has come back clear and glad Faith is clear now Spotti. I think ours both got strangles about the same time? I'm waiting for the first swab to come back from my horse to see if he's got the all clear. If it's clear then he has another in 2 weeks if it is, if that's clear then he's considered free from it. He hardly had it at all, just 1 bit of pus/snot and that was it. If it does come back positive then I think he will have to have his guttural pouches flushed and antibiotics placed in them to clear it, then have the swabs again to check if it's clear. Hoping to get the results back in the next couple of days. There is a mare at the yard who has now had it for almost 3 months. The only option for her is to have the abscesses lanced but they are definitely going down slowly so have been leaving it to nature. She will probably have a blood test when it is over to see if there's an underlying cause as to why she's had it so bad. I think in most cases it is pretty straightforward and more inconvenient, but it can turn nasty. Hopefully they will get a decent vaccine sorted soon. I think it's been a good year for buying shares in disinfectant companies though! We will definitely be more careful now at our yard, but don't have great facilities for quarantining, but do not want to go through this again!!

Cherry - we were the same re not great quarantining facilities, but hopefully all new horses should be quarantined before being allowed to mix with the others now (I say hopefully...).
I'm sure I should have bought shares in virkon because between us we used loads!!!!

Thanks everyone for your kind words and support through this. Karma will be handed out as and when I am allowed. Spotti is first 'cos she has coped with so much... I agree euthanising is a terrible idea. Sledge hammers and nuts come to mind. Who suggested that? Glad your horse is over it Cherry and that Faith is fine. Worrying that another has had it for 3 months...FGS!! Is the yard shut? Ours is, no one can go anywhere, even hacking is not allowed, and we are waiting for two new horses to arrive and Tristan to come home. I think they'd be an all oit mutiny if this went on into the New Year!!! Interesting what you say about the Irish treatment; turning them away basically, that seems to be what happened with Murph although the bloke the owner got him from denies he ever, ever had strangles, but if it's in his blood he must have done musn't he??? ......so some fibbing going on. In many ways quarantining wouldn't have helped us. Murphy has at no time shown any symptoms whatsoever and it was only when Ro got his snotty nose and cough that Murphy was blood tested, because he was new and Irish...had he been put on his tod for two weeks it wouldn't have made a scrap of diffference and Ro would still have got his cold. What the YO has decided however is to have new "suspect" horses blood tested before mixing. ............not that he intends to have any new "suspect" horses on his yard after this.

Some horses can become carriers from contact with infected animals without ever actually having the illness. In fact I'm sure I have read that most carriers never exibit any symptoms

In fact I'm sure I have read that most carriers never exibit any symptoms I just came back to this thread to hand out karma so hadn't spotted Brig's and Otto's comments. Thanks brig, final bloods today and hopefully all clear after that. Vet's suicides??? Sure they aren't moiders??? ;D I am beginning to think what you say is right Otto, there is no doubt Murphy has shown NO signs at all at any time of being off colour and his history makes it quite possible that he has been infected but no signs of illness. the Oirsh bloke is totally insistent that the horse has never had the illness but he was turned away for a long time in a herd so it seems very likely he was exposed to it then. One of life's mysteries but good old Ro did them a favour getting that cold. If he hadn't we'd still be in blissful ignorance and Murph would be a ticking time bomb. Now let's get down to handing out the karma.....
