Can't remember if I already said something, but hope your mum's ok Racaille. How is she feeling now?
Jen - again, hope your grandma is ok.
And Jane - that sounds painful. What happened?

Thanks peeps, she's doing well. The therapists had her out of bed and shuffling a bit this morning and she's now discussing the hospital menu (like a restaurant!!) so she must be feeling quite chirpy!!!

Racaille
Glad your Mum is ok, it is a pain (literally) not being able to sleep on your side, a recliner chair is often really good for sleeping in as well as general resting.
I just have arthritis..... just one of those things, I am just very lucky and very grateful that my hips were fixed and I can still ride, haha my biggest fear was not being able to.
Before the op I used to force myself to ride, I would have my OH hold the pony and the saddle whilst I climbed onto a tall bucket, I would step into the stirrup and try to get my other leg over the saddle (my god was it painful) then I would have to hover until my hips let me sit down, trotting was a painful nightmare but walking I could cope with. I would ride around our village choosing the flatest places as going up or down steep hills was really painful. Dismounting was hilarious... what I looked like!... but once i got to the ground I was stuck in one position till I could hobble upto my wall where I left my stick.... still that all seems like a long time ago.
I can ride for hours on end now, get off and on to open gates and noone would ever know my hips were artificial, usually I ride for three to four hours on a normal hack, but go much further a couple of times a week so I can safely say these new hips have had a good work out and are so worth the discomfort of the operation.

well grandma got as far as shuffling round before she collapsed the first time and had her minor heart attack and today the doctors think she has had another one. so its back to enforced bed rest until the heart rate is normal (its going really fast now) and then back to square one - again! *sighs*
jane im glad you like your new hips - im gonna print this out for grandma and show her it to try and persuade her to have the other one done!!! the first thing she said when she came round from the anaesthetic was dont even consider talking about the next one!!!

Jane, you are an inspiration. I will never again complain about old age aches and pains. Have a karma for being not just brave but modest, too.

I hope all goes well with your mums op. I tried to talk my surgeon into doing my op with an epidural but he wouldnt, I had to do the full knock out. I am sure they will take great care of her but it is so worrying

Racaille, glad to see your mum's doing fine, it must be a relief.
funkifairie, I hope your grandma is improving as well and gets the all clear soon.
Jane, that sounds amazing. I'm rather like the way you were before your op and I know how painful it is to keep riding. It must have been quite difficult getting back to riding again after your op but you must feel like you've been set free!

Florence
"It must have been quite difficult getting back to riding again after your op "
actually no, this was the strange thing, it was the most natural thing in the world.... I just got back on, it was like my muscles all knew what to do and of course there was no more bone on bone pain. I got back on nine weeks post op and went out for a good hour first time....
If you are suffering with your hips I may be able to help you, I have hippy get togethers and can help find you a good surgeon and a good hip, both are very important. Please PM me ghould you need some help

Had an orthopaedic surgeon as a rando client once and she said riding was really great for all sort of joint things, particularly knee replacements, as it built muscle around the knees. Funnily enough she'd recently had a new hip and knee (she really was an elderly lady) and was back riding within six weeks and six months later had cycled, yes, on a pushbike, from Paris to Athens. She was a little miffed that it had taken her as 'long' as 10 days!!!!! My mum's Ok, had a bit of a setback yesterday after having a mini-stroke during the night and being unable to speak for a few hours. But she was back chattering later, and the brain scan seems OK.

Crumbs, that's quick Funki! My mum's due out tomorrow or Saturday and then will spend a month at a 're-education' centre having physio. Glad I don't have to nurse her! Who's going to look after your gran? Not another task for you, I hope? I can understand her impatience to be up and about, though, you should have seen my mum's grin when she finally shuffled to the loo on her own!!!! ;D

oh goodness funifairie! I do hope she's going to be okay. On the plus side, it does sound like the doctors are doing their best for her.
racaille, your mum seems to be making such a good recovery. And what a good idea to get them out of hospital and into a separate place for physio.

OMG Funki, I hope the gastro thingy goes well. Poor old soul, it sounds like she is having a really awful time. Thanks Florence for the good wishes. She does seem to be battling back now. She's been in hospital for 10 days and can't wait to get out .... ;D

Glad to hear mum is doing well Racialle. my MIL has had both hips done and they had her on her feet right away and she was amazed as to how quickly she was back on her feet and was very annoyed at not being able to drive for weeks!
