It was on BBC2 last nite at 9pm. Set in Auchwitz (sp), the Jewish members of a hut are selected for the gas chambers, split into 2 groups but they don't know which group will die the following day. They have to make room for incoming Jews from Poland. Someone asks "what kind of God would allow such things to happen? and they put "God on Trial" I expected it to be far more upsetting at the end than it was and I'm glad I saw it through, truly amazing acting. A powerful drama well worth watching. Should be on the "I" player on BBC website. Zx

Gosh- I wish Id seen it. Ive been to Auchtswich (sp) and it was such a strange experience. You see a hut where all the prisoner photos are displayed and you see all these tired but healthy looking faces, theres the dates displayed of their admission and then the dates of their deaths and in some cases its less than a week but it could be your mother or brother looking at you in the picture! And its true- theres no birds- you can see trees in the distance but nothing flies overhead! Did you see the Schindlers List movie- the whole theater was stunned into silence and when it ended nobody moved, just sat there as though it was sacrilege to move!

I've never been to Auschwitz but I believe that we should never forget what happened there, and across Europe at that time and since. In the early 90's a similar situation was occuring in Yugoslavia, I was an intelligent adult, I watched the news but what did I do??? Nothing, like most people not directly affected. I'm not a religious person but i am a "humanist" and these atrocoties should not be allowed to happen any where in the world and none of us should forget what has gone before. Sorry to be dark and philosophical but I think we should all remember.
Interestingly the chap who produced (?) this also did "Welcome to Sarajevo" possibly one of the most horrific and moving films of my generation; along side "Shindler's List". As you witnessed Brig, when I saw that at the cinema everyone left in silence, Zx

As Zara says- our generation thought it could never happen again- but it has, in Iraq, Yogoslavia, recently in Africa and no doubt happening now as I type and as you read this. What is it about our natures that make us strive for dominance of others and greedy for wealth. I know this is a dark and philosophical thread but we should never forget, not just the events but of our capacity to destroy. I will check out the iplayer over the weekend- thanks Zara.
