I need you guys to talk me down - I HAVE to say no..... My friend the YO has a wonderful dog, a fox terrier, who is incredibly sweet but very independent and a real hunter (brings down rabbits all the time). Now Mr D'Arcy the vet has been treating her father/brother and is looking for a new home for him. The dog may be complicated. Here's why I mustn't take him: I have two rescue dogs already and the boxer (a male) took a long time to turn around. The other dog has a possible tumour, under investigation (vet fees mounting up). I have free-range chickens. The OH would kill me. Unless I did a Gnuton and say it's only temporary ........

mmmm logically and rationally I would say no you shouldnt take it on - Money time etc but ummmmmm we humans - espicially the horsey people - are not known for being rational and logical when it comes to animals needing homes lol. I think the "only temporary" solution for the OH is a good excuse hee hee

Will the OH kill you humanly? Is the dog really special? Do you mind headless chickens? You are all softies when it comes to animals - go for it!!!

Sorry the dog wins it for me. We had a wire haired fox terrier as a child. He was so much fun but a real free spirit if you know what i mean. Little terrier crosses roamed the village for years after he poped his cloggs. On the other hand I hated having to clean out the hen shed! Yeuk! Cage the chooks, keep the dog. Temporarily of course

Sometimes when they need someone they find them! Has he found you? You will know deep down if this is the case!
My little scruffy dog found me and now he is my devoted (except when rabbits are about) companion. He has a wonky leg and runs for cover when I get the broom out or when my OH talks too loud or the little boy throws his ball- so what life he had before I can only guess- but now he is with me as long as he chooses to be and I hope its for life.

Aaaargh, that's what I'm worried about, that he'll just look at me ...... But I have two rescue dogs already and am just at that point where they are perfect (despite a desperate first year with the boxer, never known a boxer to be such a 'bad' dog, and I've had loads of them) Maybe it's all got too comfortable .... In truth, I'm only worried about my poor chickens, who already have to outrun the fox and the buzzard. Keeping them in really isn't an option. Will google fox terriers to see if they are trainable not to kill. LOL ..... did anyone notice that I didn't say the OH was the big problem? Gnuton, you've got a lot to answer for!!! ;D

Oh my, Racaille. I'm so proud of you. ;D As for your chickens they'll more than likely be okay. You'll have a tough few weeks acclimatizing Newdog, (keeping him on leash, and don't let him roam freely at first) He will quickly learn your property boundaries and even though he'll probably still go hunting outside those boundaries he will protect all the inhabitants within those lines. Especially from the fox's, hence the name fox terrier. Umm, that's just my theory and probably way out to lunch but I'm sure you'll come up with the perfect solution.

I think my scruffy dog would get the chickens! He's a bit thick really and cant seem to get the hang of not chasing small running animals! You cant cuddle a chicken!

The real Wu (who is a cat) says that it is a great privilege to be chosen by an animal. Taking this dog will greatly increase your Karma. Your chickens will learn to avoid him. You should also heed the advice of the Brigadier, for she is most wise!! Good luck to you both

how would the other dogs take to him? can the chickens not just be roasted? Exactly what I was going to say - put the birds out of their misery (of running from the fox) and eat them! No probs! On the other hand - if you think it will affect the progress your boxer has made (who has obviously had some trauma then I would say maybe not...

Ho ho, you are awful, you guys! What have you got against my poor chickens? In fact, the decision has been taken for me. My little rescued hunting dog (who doesn't hunt the chickens) is not well and may well have a gynae tumour (although she has been spayed). She has to have an op and I cannot have her bothered by another boy dog. Percy the boxer leaves her alone but she gets really aggressive if other boys get fruity with her. I also did quite a lot of research into fox terriers - and everything said they don't mix with cats or chickens! So not the dog for me ... another one will come along, they always do.
