The shetland seems to be itching his tail and mane again.... after hogging himself in the autumn. He doesn't go out of his way to itch just when he is in and uses the box/door or the rear ramp of the trailer. What are the actual signs of sweet itch? When he itched his mane out in around the beginning of Oct he was a little scabby - nothing major. Any ideas folks?

hi. i have had 3 sweet itch ponys 1 mild case and 2 very bad.we found the best thing was itch stop salve complete.it says put on once a week but i put it on every day.it forms a barrier and works very well.it costs about 20 pounds a tub.we also use sudacream and vasaline to heal sores.if its really bad a boett rug is excellent but very expensive and needs to be put on early spring before the midges start biting.slap on loads of cream and it will help a little.baymare.

Thanks - I think I'll keep an eye on him but use the barrier cream as suggested on his tail and see how he goes.
