Ok, so farrier comes out, no abscess there, despite huge crack in foot yaddayaddayadda. Eddies still very lame on leg, farrier reckoned it is knee or fetlock, but could be higher up.
Hes probably about 6-7/10ths lame. Its clearly visable at walk, and standing, hes pointing, or resting - ie taking foot completely off the ground and flexing knee and mostly fetlock. At times fetlock is almost touching the floor hes bent it so much...
No sign of inflammation - no heat/swelling/pain (to touch) etc
Any of you guys shine a light on to possibilities? Hes been on 1 sachet of bute for past week and a half.
Vet out tomorrow around 11.30

sounds to me like lower down rather than higher up if resting and flexing. This would suggest to me foot or fetlock.
Is he still lame despite the bute or only when he comes off it?

I agree with Raymond, if pointing foot it sounds low rather than high. Hope all goes well with the vet Zx

Hes no different with bute, still obvious lameness, still pointing and taking weight off leg completely.

I would have thought perhaps some improvement with bute - it sounds like symptoms of twist or strain, but with no heat or swelling that sounds unlikely..
any difference in pulse at fetlock? with no heat or swelling and toe pointing I would normally start with foot as the problem - but you say farrier already been so no obvious foot problem.
I think for this vet just going to start with the foot and work their way up.. nerve block via heel??

No difference in pulse.
Farrier thought it was higher up than in the foot by the way he stands ... ill try get a pic today.
Bruise would be painful to touch, which no where on the leg is... unless its deep inside a shoulder muscle maybe? If its something in his shoulder area, there wouldnt be heat or swelling around the leg...
Ah i dunno, hes a confusing one! Who said the bigger the better! More like the bigger the more confusing! lol!
I got the farrier out as soon as i got home and saw the 'damage' aka Eddie limping along. We buted him up for a week and a half as of farriers instruction - we had a few sachets, enough to do it so thought might aswell. Vet would only get us to do that anyway, weve saved ourselves another unnecessary call out fee technically. Not that thats important in that respect, id rather pay the £40 call out than watch him suffer... Horses grrr

v v confusing - well let us know how you get on with vet. I hate lameness investigations. My experience was spent great deal of money and one day he was just right on his own! blooming horses!

When Murph had a really deep seated abscess noone really knew what it was so he went to vet hosp. One vet thought a fractured pelvis, one an abscess and one unashamedly didn't know for sure so we took him for xrays to put minds at rest and his usual vet was right but the abscess was right up nearly at coronet band...once it burst he was fine in days but the pressure was so bad prior to this that he couldn't hardly weight bear and was hanging his leg at a funny angle to body hence the 3 vets and their diognises....remind me why do we love these creatures so much??

Because they go lame so often, and cause our hearts and pockets so much ache we cant afford to sell them afterwards!!!

Heres the vets opinion, thought you guys might all want to see -
Flexion tests showed its in the elbow or the shoulder. Nerve blocks - no good as theyre for lower down in the leg, so werent done.
Hes coming back at the end of the week if possible to xray.
We never had to trot the poor lad up, he was in some what distress in walk, so flexions were just done in walk.
When they come back to xray, Gems having a biopsy on the lump near her glands. The other ones - one on her neck he thinks is a sarcoid , one on her head is nothing to worry about, melanomas on her tail, unchanged so nothing to worry about, but the one on her glands is worying him apparently. Its not her 'glands' which have the lump, its some lymph node up there he reckons has the lump. Says it could possibly just be a salivary gland blocked.
If it is a tumour, do we put her thru a stressful and difficult op to remove the tumour, or do we leave it be? Theres lots of nerves and glands around the area to make it more complicated...
Eddie is still very much unknown though atm, hence needing xrays. On bute, 2 sachets a day for next 3 days, then 1 a day after that until all 12 sachets are used up.

blimey - poor you. Sounds like you are having a right time of it. If its not elbow and instead shoulder are they going to scan? They thought ray's lameness was shoulder and they sent him to equine hospital for scan as could not x-ray shoulder.

Oh i dont know, theyre planning to xray both. Theyve got a new mobile xray machine which is like a digital camera apparently. Hoping they can xray the area as we havent got transport for Mr Ed, hes too big for the trailer so my dad refuses to take the partition out to make room!

that's brilliant. I had to travel ray about 60 odd miles to get it done it was a nightmare! technology is a marvellous thing. at least they are getting straight on with x-ray and you don't have to have any nerve blocks done. they are the pits.

The old xray machine they used to bring was huge. On wheels, needed electricity (which we dont have) and had a double horse trailer to process the xrays! I havent seen the new one, but its apparently quite small.

Gem had her biopsy, from what came out the lump, it doesnt look pleasing. Will know more once the slides have gone to the labs though. She had to have a small amount of sedation, cotton wool in her ears, and have a hand acting as a blinker to clip out the area though! Nerve blocked Eddie firstly, in the abaxial sesamoid nerve, blocking out the whole foot and pasterns. Walked him up and he was much better after 15mins. Then put him in Berthas stable and got xraying. Vet arrived at 10.30, he left at 1.30! Eddie wasnt best behaved, he kept moving about, even after sedation. Gem was in her stable the whole time, and got very worked up as the barn doors were closed to make it darker in the stable. Vet said he'd call either this evening or tomorrow morning once hes developed the xrays and had a look at them.
